I'm trying to pick out a knife to give as my gift to the groomsmen in my wedding. I've heard good thing about Spyderco knives before and I'm considering the Native based off recommendations in this thread: message_topic.aspx?topic=550613&page=2. It doesn't appear to be available at walmart anymore, but is on amazon for 52 ( http://www.amazon.com/Spyderco-Native-Lightweight-Plain-Knife/dp/B0002IO16E) I personally have a few kershaw knives that I like, and was considering the blur for 30 (http://www.amazon.com/Kershaw-Onion-Black-Folding-Knife/dp/B004TB6RTE). Also, after reading some forums many people suggest the Buck Vantage Pro (http://www.amazon.com/Buck-Vantage-Knife-Black-Silver/dp/B001V2IAVC) for 56. I don't want to go much above $50. Anyone have any comments on the knifes I listed or any other suggestions?

I'm not a fan of the blade on that Spyderco but I do like the company. I carry a Delica 4 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000PL5C84 and it's great. I'd skip the $30 Kershaw personally. It has a lower quality steel than the $50 version (and lower than the Spyderco knives).

I carry a Delica 4 as well. Ive beat the piss out of it for a couple years and its as good as new. Its way more functional than it is pretty, so I'm not sure it would be the best for a gift unless all your groomsmen are knife guys and can appreciate it for its function.

I have the Spyderco native and I love it! I plan to buy more Spydercos in the future. My Dad had used the native for over 10 years (he said) and never had a problem with it, so that's what I picked up when I was in the market. It's well built compared to many other knives I've handled, fits my hand well, and I just love the click it makes when it locks . I think it looks nice enough to be a gift, but I'm not a knife snob or anything.

my newest daily carry is a CRKT mcginnis tuition

my first 8Cr14MoV, love the micarta scales

biggest complaint is that it's a bit short (my pinky doesn't even grab the handle), but it's a thick and durable blade and the little annoyance that is the shortish handle is something i got over very quickly...an extremely good deal at the ~$20 you can find them for

if nothing else, the micarta scales and titanium nitride coating on the frame make it one of my more interesting knives

i'd like to have the CRKT summa eventually

^ That's a great knife. It's too bad they sold out today. I got one a few weeks ago and I love it. I was looking to pick up a few more for gifts.

They were. The knife hit Slickdeals for the second time in 4 weeks. Considering that only 1400ish of those knives were made and the price and I'm surprised they were in stock for as long as they were.

I actually did get that knife! Thanks for all the help everyone. I ended up getting me one too, I'm excited for it to come on Friday. I was already deciding between that knife and the spyderco native and then saw that it was on slickdeals today and figured wouldn't last long after that so I jumped on it.

http://www.amazon.com/Gerber-31-000802-Paraframe-Blade-Knife/dp/B004SQTPL2/ - $13.50

probably not a very good knife though as that appears to be the normal price

I'm not a collector of knives or anything, but if you're looking for something they'll use, I carry a Buck knife around. It's a spring-assisted 3.25" blade. Small, clean, and a peice of cake to use with one hand.

Some of the other guys that know more about the subject can tell you if this is a decent knife, but it works for me and hasn't really gone dull yet.

^that's the one I have, but it comes in blue, as well with a serrated blade near the base of the blade.

^^ if you don't mind wating 2 to 3 weeks its also avaible from Amazon for $36.99 and free shipping (see the more buying choices on the side bar). It's a very nice knife, though it's on the larger side for every day carry (probably a little too large).

I've carried a Buck Rush 290T since it's introduction in 2004 (methinks?), and have used the shit out of it. broke the tip off, no sweat, filed it flat and had a slotted screwdriver function. I've since broken the tip again and am now looking to replace it with the same thing. I love the weight, profile and assist-open

Maybe what you need to carry is a screwdriver.

Seriously. Knives are made for cutting things, not prying (unless you bought a Busse Combat, Strider, BK&T, etc).
I carry either a Spyderco Native or Microtech LCC and a Victorinox Super Tinker. If I need to pry or shear then I'll break out the SAK's screwdriver and save my blades for actually cutting stuff.

I think it's traditional, but also for them having to do shit other than party.

I've got a hand blown glass paperweight, some binoculars that are pretty good to keep on the boat, a pewter mug engraved with my initials that I think I gave to Goodwill, and a knock off Leatherman tool + Tire pressure gauge that got lost somewhere between Bluewater Grill and Pure Gold for my past wedding duties.

^^ That's true. You have to oil the blade often otherwise you get little microdots of rust.

If you take some metal polish such as flitz or brasso and lightly rub over the surface (not enough to make the bead blast shiny) then it'll help keep rust away. The problem is they use blasting media that's too coarse or blast it at too high a pressure leaving a really rough surface. You can smooth out the micro irregularities with polish without affecting the finish too much.
I'm not a fan of bead blasted finishes on knives. Any one I've owned ended up getting a hand rubbed satin finish.

Your company probably has a little more money to spend than the average joe.

I would be thrilled to get a nice knife as a groomsmen gift, and wouldn't expect anything.

I'm not a knife connoisseur... so the thing serves it's purpose for me, and I thought it humorous that I gained some added utility after i broke the tip.

If the Buck can't handle it, it's time to swap to the Leatherman.

i don't mind a little rust on my blades...certainly not enough that i'm going to put any extra effort into getting rid of it when it's just going to come back again

rust != bad steel

my do-everything knife while backpacking is a freaking mora 511

I have 3 kershaw knives, and nonskid them show rust, or have ever rusted.
I snapped the tip off one of my Leeks, and the used it as as a screw driver as well.

I have http://tinyurl.com/cn74n8j The Kershaw Ken Onion blackout 47290 for when I work as a paramedic. Amazing knife, very durable, and extremely sharp even after a year or so of use (probably use it once to twice a week... cutting seatbelts and shit like that)

In the market for a new knife; looking for a fixed blade combat knife no longer than 6 inches not more than $150. If its got a sheath that can be molle'd even better. Would love a combat tomahawk but just no room for one on my gear. GO!

Buck Hoodlum
Weight: 14.6 oz (22.0 g)

Blade Length: 10" (25.4 cm)
Blade Material: 5160 Carbon Steel
Handle Material: Micarta
Carry System: Black, heavy duty nylon, M.O.L.L.E. compatible sheath

http://www.katerno.com/detail.php?s=265511

4" too long and not really a combat knife, but it fits the price requirement and the sheath is MOLLE compatible.

A big knife can do a small job, but a small knife can't do a big job!
