I started a book club with some friends!
Every 3-4 weeks we're gonna meet to discuss two or three short stories from the Gardner Dozois 2011 "Best of Science Fiction" anthology. Usually it's between 30-50 pages of reading so it's not a huge time commitment.

The first meeting went really well. Join the mailing list if you want to get details or come to a meeting! 9/11/2011 2:43:27 PM |

Oh man, I'm going to join this reading club so hard.
I actually already have this book. I bought it after I met with Ian MacLeod this summer while I was in the UK with the NCSU Creative Writing and John Kessel, yet another noteworthy sci-fi author.
Plus I get to meet Metricula and talk about books, who doesn't want that? 9/11/2011 3:10:49 PM |

Oh man, I took so many Kessel classes in undergrad. You did the Oxford program?
The other people (there were about seven at the last one) are all really articulate and smart. It was good discussion.
But yeah, if you already have the book you should totally come! 9/11/2011 5:38:35 PM |

This is something I'd be interesting in doing, but won't be in Raleigh till December, would you still be doing it around then? 9/11/2011 7:22:46 PM |

I might give this a shot. I'll grab a copy of the book and see if I have the time to read it. 9/11/2011 7:29:25 PM |

Yeah, we'll probably still be meeting in/after December! We're trying to work through most of the anthology over the next year, two or three stories at a time. 9/11/2011 9:15:52 PM |

what stopped you from putting science fiction in the title of this thread? 9/11/2011 9:19:47 PM |

Because people who are into science/speculative fiction know what SF stands for? 9/11/2011 10:45:25 PM |

I like Sci-Fi, I did not know SF was the shorten version of it. I honestly thought OP was trying to create a reading club based on books written in San Fran... lol 9/11/2011 10:47:06 PM |

San Fran reading club could also be an interesting experience...
But yeah, trying to get spec and science into one acronym. 9/12/2011 8:11:55 AM |

We're meeting this Wednesday!
There are story summaries on the google group if anyone wants to come but hasn't read the stories.
Serendipitous fact: one of the stories is based on "Who Goes There?", the John Campbell story that became the movie "The Thing" of which there's a remake coming out 14 October! 9/26/2011 8:32:37 PM |
