The entire point of the Grandfather in Ellison's Invisible Man is that he represents the wrong approach to black empowerment (a la Ellison's long-standing argument with Booker T. Washington), it's a parody of blacks taking a step back by purposefully undermining themselves, "hiding in plain sight". To insinuate that Obama is anything like the Grandfather (who is Booker T. Washington in the comparison) is to say that he's lost his cultural identity, he's submissive to the white man because he dare not openly assert himself, and that he's just the errand boy to a smarter, more powerful white man.
