some old white boy, was behind me at the self check out.

he goes "o crap i need to run and get another [something another] i didnt realize they were buy one get one free"

the working attendent goes " well Sir, you dont have to buy 4 as BOGO means the items are half off!"

the guy is like "o awesome, thanks!"

is this a more common misunderstanding than i may have realized?

My understanding is the discount only applies when you scan both items as stores implement BOGO to clear inventory.

I've always heard this, but never felt like trying it and making an ass out of myself when it doesn't work.

[Edited on September 14, 2011 at 11:27 PM. Reason : at least at the teeter]

I know for SURE at Food Lion that they put like 10/$10 or whatever, but you don't ever have to buy the marked quantity - you'll get the discount regardless.

That is, the computer does the math for you - so if you don't want to buy 5,000 cup'o'noodles to get the discount, you can buy one and it'll still give you whatever percentage off.

MVP CARD SON!

^^^^that's true for the x amount for y dollars, but BOGO implies that you have to buy one at regular price to get one free.

now that I think about it HT doesnt apply the bogo discount unil the end of the transaction, they even have a sign that says that

so obviously they're making sure you get two items, bhs what store were you at?

I learned this (BOGO = 1/2 off, etc) when I started buying groceries for myself

my experience has been the tag would specifically state something like "must purchase [quantity]" for certain things that didn't apply

HT does half off when it's BOGO. It's only Buy 2 Get 3 where you have to follow the rules as far as I can tell.

isn't "buy one, get one free" specific enough?

I can guarantee that Grub Cub (Food Lion) and Harris Teeter are straight up 1/2 off on BOGO products.

HT has implemented BOGO as "buy one for half price" for as long as I remember

Food Lion, on the other hand, I thought you had to buy two for it to be valid? Same at Kroger.

The only reason they do this is because if you buy 1 get 1 free.. then you have 1 item to use which takes a unit of time to consume and then you have a second item to consume which take another unit of time (for a total of 2 units of time) which could potentially last you until the next b1g1 free sale.

On the other hand:
If someone buys 1 product for half the price, they will take only 1 unit of time to consume the product and hopefully they'll want or need more when the item is off sale.

At worst, they break even. The worst is only the best when the policy is mandated at B1G1.
At best, everyone will need the second product on a week that there is no special.

Therefore, to open up the possibility of a better than worst case scenario over time, they allow you to b1 at half off.

HOWEVER. I was at the teeter and they had buy 2 12packs get 3 free... they weren't incrementally discounted, you had to buy two, the next three were marked off.

I think most of the time, it's everything is reduced by x percentage depending on the special. It really just depends on the store and the situation.

This completely depends on the store....as an avid couponer I can assure it works both ways.....
HT is 1/2 but they changed about 5 years ago because seniors complained
FL is 1/2
LF is 1/2

Most drug stores you have to buy two.

If you b1g2 or b2g3...you have to buy the whole set pretty much no matter where you are.

In that case, Kroger needs to step up their BOGO game. Pretty sure you have to buy two there.

(I prefer Teeter and do most of my shopping there, but Kroger is closest to my house so they get the short trips)
