my wife's car is in her mom's name and it's due for inspection and renewal this month...she'd like to get one of the specialized plates (not vanity)...how would that process work? get the inspection, go by the DMV to request a special plate, wait for it to come in the mail? does the car have to be in her name in order to do this?
yes, i realize calling the DMV is the best option, but i'm not in a place i can call right now and so i figured it couldn't hurt to ask y'all
also, it's been in her mom's name for 5 years for cheaper insurance she'll change it as soon as she can make the drive back home to have the title transferred during business hours 9/19/2011 2:47:16 PM |

I'm pretty sure you just go into the DMV and order it. And it's entirely independent of the inspection, as in you do not need to get the car re-inspected just because it has a new plate.
At least, this is how it went down for me when I had my car (years ago) transferred from my dad's name (for insurance purposes) to mine. Of course this was before they switched to doing things all electronically and got rid of the windshield stickers so it may have changed.
