Quote : | "1. North Carolina State University
As if North Carolina wasn’t already rife with bass fishing history and tradition, it is also home to the 2010 top bass fishing college. North Carolina State University is in Raleigh, N.C., where Wolfpack anglers, better known as the BassPack, have access to thousands of acres of prime fishing water in the center of the state. They also have put together one of the most organized and established college clubs in the country.
Founded in 2005, BassPack club membership is hovering at more than 50. But don’t think all those members will hold anyone back from participating. The club fishes regularly, with monthly qualifying tournaments, invitationals hosted by them and neighboring schools, and the top national collegiate circuits on the schedule.
The club has won two premier national championships, and it also qualified four teams for the 2009 National Guard FLW College Fishing Northern Division Regional Championship.
But what may be most attractive to students is the access to water.
“Just within 50 miles we have Kerr Lake, Falls Lake, Jordan Lake, Lake Wheeler, Harris Lake and some smaller city lakes – we’ve got I think six of those here within about 10 or 12 miles of the university,” said Chris Wood, the head of public relations for the BassPack and a Wake Forest, N.C., native.
The size of the club and availability of boats, plus cooperation with nearby colleges and local bass clubs, make NC State the top college in the country not only for aspiring tournament pros, but those still in the introductory levels." |

I've always wondered: in bass fishing, what if you catch a fish that isn't a bass? Does it count towards your score at all? Like, if I caught a big ass catfish that weighed 20 pounds, does it not count because it's not a bass? 9/23/2011 12:19:27 PM |

Call me when NC State creates a bowfin and gar fishing team.
^i mean, you know its so rare that you catch fish other than bass, im sure they never thought to throw them back without adding them to the livewell or point total.

you have to catch a bass, large mouth, small mouth or spot. A catfish wont count towards your total. Some of the tourneys that they hold on the Mississippi river and similar rivers the anglers will get into a bunch of freshwater drum while trying to catch bass. They just throw them back. It is not too often that a bass angler catches something else. They are very specifically targeting bass and patterns that the bass are currently feeding in and there are not to many other species of fish that follow these same patterns. 9/23/2011 2:23:24 PM |

well thats the most advanced fisherman, the guys at this level are probably just beginning to have the kind of equipment and selection to decrease hooking non-target species. Im sure they have the knowledge.
thats just my guess 9/23/2011 3:24:32 PM |

catfish are bottom feeders. bass are not. 9/23/2011 3:32:50 PM |
BigHitSunday Dick Danger 51059 Posts user info edit post |
thats false on both accounts
catfish stay on bottom because their eyes are sensitive, but they are just as willing to hit top water as bass are, which have eyes less sensitive to light but on the sunniest of days will try to avoid it. That includes feeding deeper as well as feeding in lies
at night catfish are feeding all levels baby, true bottom feeders are like suckers and sculpin and shit. Bass feed on bottom vast majority of their diet, its easy pickings

Interesting, thanks for the info.
I just know that when i used to fresh-water fish (which i've done very little of in the last couple decades) i never caught catfish when fishing for bass. Crappie and Brim sometimes, iirc, but no catfish. 9/23/2011 3:41:28 PM |

However, Wiki disagrees:
Quote : | "Most catfish are bottom feeders. In general, they are negatively buoyant, which means that they will usually sink rather than float due to a reduced gas bladder and a heavy, bony head...
flattened head allows for digging through the substrate.....
catfish generally feed through suction or gulping rather than biting and cutting prey." |

I want to join a saltwater fishing team. I grew up near the beach, so most of what we did was drum, spanish mackerel, striped bass, amberjack, grouper, etc.
I just never understood why they focus solely on a specific breed, unless it's one that's more difficult to hook like marlin. Catching a bass isn't nearly as difficult. 9/23/2011 3:58:41 PM |

Knowing nothing about the bass fishing team, why is NCSU such a good bass fishing school? do they recruit the best high school fishermen to come to NCSU? or is it just because a higher percentage of good ol' boys go to State? 6/21/2012 10:32:31 AM |

There is access to Falls Lake, Jordan Lake and Shearon Harris Lake all within 20 minutes of NCSU. Those are three very productive bass fishing lakes that each fish differently. You also have many other lakes within an hour or two of here. There are not to many other schools with the fishing opportunities that we have here. Also the club is very organized and is quickly building a tradition.6/21/2012 1:14:18 PM |

also quite a few other states do not allow bass fishing during spawning periods so you have to be real careful with the lures you choose and the techniques if you are gonna *wink* fish for other species */wink*, NC has no such regulations we anglers can fish when we want year round.
