Joie had this on her page a few days ago. I watched it with Maya and I, too, cried. Maya was like, "It's ok, mama."

There are speech therapists for the deaf. It works best on deaf people who still have a small degree of hearing.? This is most likely the kind of deafness this woman has, seeing as a hearing aid would not assist a person who is 100 percent deaf.

And please thumb this up so these people will stop commenting already.

Allegedly, at least

They should do one with a blind chick all happy that she can see for the first time

Then she sees her reflection, and she's heinous

Then she's sad again

When I first got my hearing aids, the central air in the doctor's office kicked on and scared the shit out of me because I had never heard that before.

I definitely cried when I watched this.

I wonder what it's like to hear for the first time after so long. I mean, how do you describe sound and how does your brain process it for the first time. Also, what if you don't like hearing things. I mean, I get annoyed at hearing people talk and I've been hearing for almost 24 years.

What if the first thing you ever heard was a Keisha song?

Would it ruin you for music forever, or make you appreciate even average music so much more, simply for the fact that its not Keisha?

What if she didn't like hardcore music and ended up only loving broadway show tunes.

That would be an identity crisis with those tats

If I ran this study, I'd bare ass fart in the person's face saying "Can you hear me now?" like the verizon guy until they said yeah or passed out from the noxious fumes

win/win

my grandma wont wear her hearing aids because she "can hear herself chew" and "its bothersome."

i tried explaining to her that i too can hear myself chew and YOURE SUPPOSED TO.

so i guess having that silence while youre eating is worth saying "what?" 50x over the course of a meal.

Although, on second thought, it would be kind of fun to just move your lips around in front of her without making any sound just to freak her out from time to time.

Also, I'm wondering how listening/understanding someone talk would work if you have never heard someone actually speak before. She seems to understand the person pretty easily but I'd think it wouldn't be that easy.

I watched a documentary about hearing implants where they kind of went into this. Apparently the older the person is, the more likely they are to have issues concerning an "overload" of sound. Because they haven't had years of practice filtering out sounds that aren't pertinent to their immediate situation etc. Sometimes it just becomes too much and they end up having the implants removed.

I sent this to my dad's girlfriend who is an audiologist.. this is her insight:

Quote :
"This is the Esteem implant, which is an implantable hearing aid (not a cochlear implant). My friend, Harry, was looking into this for him. It is actually connected to the ossicles in the middle ear, therefore it uses the natural method of hearing (the pinna/outer ear for gathering sound and then sending vibrations through the middle ear to the cochlear) and has no microphone! There have been some great results with it for people with severe hearing loss. Many people report it's so much better than a ear level hearing aid and sound so much more natural. I am learning more about it due to Harry's interest, so I am becoming familiar.

The Esteem is used for people moderate to profound hearing loss, but not deaf people.
So...I do not believe this lady was born "deaf"....I believe they are substituting that word for 'hearing impaired". It's very likely that she has congenital hearing loss, or lost her hearing at a young age, or had progressive hearing loss, and wore conventional hearing aids her whole life....She has wonderful speech, which leads me to believe that she has been aided pretty well all along.
Her speech is also so good (nor 'deaf speech") and she is understanding the audiologist (without visual cues or lipreading..she's not even looking!), so she has learned to use her residual hearing well! "

I love the video and I really want to give a hearty FU to the cynics and assholes who are calling her a liar or the video a fake. The general public just doesn't understand the meaning of "profoundly deaf." I also think that the public has a very skewed view of handicaps in general and readily expect stereotypes.

Today, children with hearing impairments receive intervention extremely early. Babies receive a hearing screen right away. Along with his cleft lip and palate, my son has mild hearing loss. He failed his hearing screen three times before his first birthday and was connected with a speech therapist right away. He signs and speaks equally, but his speech is difficult to understand and sounds stereotypical. However, he goes to group speech with children who are considered "profoundly deaf" that sound so clear that you wouldn't know that they're hearing impaired if you couldn't clearly see their hearing aids or implant.

Anyhoo, people piss me off when they get all high and mighty about stupid shit like this. You can't judge someone else's experience or handicap. It's pretty bitchy to come down as hard on stuff like this as some of the folks commenting on Youtube did. It's one thing to be honestly curious, but there's a lot of hate coming from people up there.

I wonder if my grandfather could benefit from something like this. He lost his hearing at a young age. A kid hit him in the head with a baseball bat, caused swelling and fluid accumulation inside of the ear. The doctors at the time would poke a tiny hole in the ear drum to let the fluid come out. They did this many times and when the hole healed up, it would scar, which stiffened the ear drum to the point that he could not hear. Several years ago, he got a hearing aid, but he hates it and rarely wears it.

i looked into this, and i found she did an interview afterwards. she was only crying because it was the BEST she would ever be able to hear....and its not great. apparently the vocoder implant sounds like shit, but you can kinda get used to it. nonetheless, it doesn't sound like real sound, and she only cried because she realized it'd never get better.
