Calling Jesus left or right is pretty futile. However, in today's American political environment, Catholic Social Teaching comes off as being anything but right wing (except if you care only about gays and abortions).
But yeah, tired of people expropriating Jesus for political self-righteousness. 10/4/2011 1:29:47 PM

Seeing as how Jesus is an imaginary figure who most likely did not exist in history, its retarded for both sides to use him as their poster child.
God too for that matter 10/4/2011 1:58:19 PM

Shocker. Most scholars involved with historical Jesus research are Christians and suffering from the biggest case of confirmation bias in the history of the world.
Contemporary sources verifying his existence do not exist. Non-Christian sources verifying his existence only ever refer to what the Christians decades later are saying about him or were edited by Christian scholars. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historicity_of_Jesus
I'd say it's nowhere near proven that he existed, and it's definitely not proven that he did anything miraculous. Extradorinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Not even the Gospels are eye-witness accounts and even if they were eye-witness accounts are the least reliable forms of evidence. 10/5/2011 1:17:50 AM

As if those who are seeking to dispel the existence of Jesus aren't suffering from a little confirmation bias of their own?

What lewisje said. Unbiasedly looking at the actual evidence doesn't support the notion. Atheists don't need Christ to have not existed. Whether he actually existed says absolutely nothing about whether divine claims are justifiably believable. Christians need for him to have existed. It's that simple really.
Oh, is this where I make a declaration and then say that I'm leaving so don't bother responding? lol

^I mean to be fair you're just refuting a blanket assumption similar to the one you laid down earlier in the thread (that all historians looking for evidence of Jesus are biased), i.e. see "dramatic oversimplificiation of historical perspectives". 10/5/2011 2:29:20 AM
