Have you written any professional papers, been published, given presentations at conferences? Do you enjoy doing it, does it really matter for career movement, is it worth the time? What have you written about?

So far I have down 2 papers/presentations for the American Society of Naval Engineers, with one of those articles being published in the Naval Engineer's Journal. I don't know if I want to do any more, although I have topics and material....trying to figure out if it's even worth it anymore.

Most recent paper/presentation:

https://www.navalengineers.org/SiteCollectionDocuments/2011%20Proceedings%20Documents/FMMS2011/Presentations/Borka.pdf

and from 2010:

ok, I cheated. it is a M.S. thesis

but it's a publication, dammit!

though people tend to discount theses/dissertations since they're not "peer reviewed". and i can sort of see that, but in many cases, these papers are reviewed much more heavily than "peer reviewed" papers. in my case, I for one, was a perfectionist on it, my PI was obviously "an expert in the field", and then my other 3 committee members were experts in directly related fields and all 5 us hashed through this thing, multiple times.

I've given presentations at a couple of conferences. I think I'm up to six now. I enjoy working on the seminars but it hasn't done squat for my career other than beefing up my public speaking skills.

I give a lot of presentations on my work. I also get interviewed and quoted by trade publications from time to time (about 5 times in the last month alone). As long as you are making your managers look good, its a win win.

I would definitely like to write some stuff for ASHRAE but I think I want to get some more experience under my belt first.

Oh, by the way, not that it matters, but I'm building a house

Oh, by the way, not a big deal, just though you'd like to know, I've been published

Oh, by the way, in case you missed it the first time, and again, not a big deal, really, but I've been published

In a web-centric world, it's not that hard to get published. Technically speaking, blogging is a form of publishing.

That said, it's definitely gratifying.

I made one hell of a powerpoint on why South Korean soybeans were not a viable investment opportunity for a domestic entity with a mid range market cap, but you don't see my tootin' my horn

I was a writer/producer/reporter for PBS for a couple of years. But since nobody watches PBS, it doesn't really count. Kind of the tree falling in an empty forest conundrum.

I write for CaryCitizen.com and have had a half dozen or so articles published by them, along with photographs.

For work, at my past job I created numerous presentations, most of them for internal training though. Recently I have written a 9 page whitepaper, several product data sheets, web copy and company blog posts.

I wrote the Electrical Distribution Manuals for TVPPA and the City of Orlando. They're used by a lot of people, but I wouldn't really consider them to be published since they're not available to the public.

Yes, but they probably aren't watching Legislative Week in Review or North Carolina Now.

Is it bad that one of my favorite parts of giving presentations at my last job was seeing the sorts of dumbass questions people would come up with during the Q&A period?

I just got acknowledged for doing most of the illustration work in a new software development book http://www.amazon.com/Agile-Software-Engineering-Visual-Studio/dp/0321685857

My master's thesis

Had my first conference presentation this spring, which was cool. Was nice to see the room mostly full, I got almost double the audience I was expecting (~120ppl)

And 4 patents, none of which have yet even cleared into USPTO.

i'd post links, but then the internets would know my full name...

four applied for from 2003-2005, three issued between 2009-2011.

some alternative charging mechanisms for electrostatically spinning nano fibers with conductive polymers and shit.

i dont do that shit anymore, which is a shame. it was fun.
