"Amber Miller will take running a marathon over labor pains any day — but on Sunday, she mastered both.

Despite being almost 39 weeks pregnant when she hit the starting line of the Chicago Marathon, Miller ran through labor contractions and the unusually warm 77-degree day to finish the race.

She delivered a healthy daughter about 7 1/2 hours later."

Thank you. Now women can stop bitching about everything. Pregnancy can't be that bad if this bitch ran a marathon

ive read that if you run throughout your whole pregnancy it's perfectly safe and healthy

but if you just randomly start running throughout it isn't good for the baby.......which tdub breeding machines can confirm/deny?

^Confirmed. Consistent exercise throughout the pregnancy also decreases the risk of preeclampsia. But, you don't want to overdo it, or suddenly jump right into intense exercises. It has to be consistent and within your limits.

Last night I read this story, followed immediately by one about a woman who wanted to give her boyfriend a son so she found a pregnant woman, clubbed her with a bat and cut her fetus out with an x-acto knife. It was an awkward set of articles to read back to back.

^^I read this article back to back with the one about the firefighter from Greensboro who died within 500 feet from the finish line.

(at the same race).

I don't see what the big hoopla is over a pregnant runner. A lot of women work out while pregnant, and like it has already been mentioned, it's good for the pregnancy (if you're consistent about it).

Also, somewhere I read pregnant runners (meaning those who were runners before then kept it up all the way through pregnancy) actually have shorter delivery times.

When the baby is passing through the birth canal, it's not like they can control it. The whole act of labor doesn't involve a woman pushing.. just fyi.

I wish men wouldn't encourage women from staying uber thin during pregnancy. I know way too many pregnant women who diet during pregnancy ... and end up having very low birth weight children. Not good for the baby.

That said, it's fine to run a marathon during pregnancy if your doc permits. But the health of the fetus comes first.

I've also read that the amount of weight women need to safely add during pregnancy is actually not that much. So this should be good info to know to keep our future wives from becoming fatties while pregnant.

There are also women who try to lose weight during pregnancy because men give them a hard time for gaining weight. Then they end up with low birth weight, malnourished babies.

Watch recovering anorexic woman diet during pregnancy. It's actually pretty sick.

I read some science article a while ago about how the curve of the human spine is specifically designed to allow pregnant women to still run effectively.

For people who have read other modern discourse on the evolution of humans post-2.5 million year ago, it goes without saying that this is endurance running. The thought is that we traveled in a pack doing long-distance tracking of large game by exhausting/over heating them.

In other words, what the woman just did is likely the exact damn thing that God designed humans to do.

^^That was the thing my sister hated most about being pregnant (she loved everything else). But she was stuck being the dd and she never had before. She said "I finally realize how stupid we act when we're drunk. Why do you put up with us and drive us around?"

If you're an obese woman and limit your calories during pregnancy, would the body just convert fat into fuel to nourish the fetus?

I don't think so... I would think it would just give HER body fuel rather than being transferred to the fetus

^I believe that is the case. I think doctors actually recommend obese women lose weight prior to getting pregnant to have a more healthy pregnancy.

The baby still needs nutrients from food and a balanced diet, which it won't get from converting the fat stores.

A healthy woman at a healthy weight prior to pregnancy only needs to eat 300 additional calories per day when pregnant. She can continue to work out at the level she was prior to being pregnant or even start a low impact exercise plan as long as it is ok'd by her doctor. It's good for the mom and baby to do so.

I'm convinced my exercise during my pregnancy led to me having a relatively short labor for my first child (7 hrs).

That said...exercise does not help with morning sickness in the beginning nor reduce the frequency to pee or make it easy in trying to get comfortable at night and during the last weeks when you've reached the waddle stage. And those are definitely the most uncomfortable and complain worthy times of pregnancy.

My last spin teacher didn't stop teaching us until a week before she delivered her baby. I was always worried she may start going into labor during class, but she didn't and it was awesome that she still worked out.

So food and vitamin supplements would go to the fetus and fat stores would go to the woman in this case?

My understanding, having neither studied this or been pregnant myself, is that the fetus takes its nutrients first, and the leftovers go to the mother. This is from my labor and delivery nurse mother, but I may not have understood what she was saying.

Regardless, the fetus can't take nutrients that aren't being consumed by the mother. Hence why you need more than just stored fat.

Right, so let's say a woman was taking in 1500 calories. Presumably the bulk of that would go to the fetus and any calorie deficiency would then come from fat?

I'm curious because I saw one of those episodes of "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant" and the woman was borderline obese and was doing a weight loss/exercise regiment while pregnant, so was eating less calories than a pregnant technically should, and couldn't figure out why she wasn't losing weight and then BAM! baby's born

i have no fucking idea, but i would guess it's not as simple as "some percentage of the stuff goes down this pipe to the baby and some percentage goes down this pipe to the mom"

My cousin has been a marathon runner since high school (she's 27 now) and did not stop running when she got pregnant. She's pushing 39 weeks herself and has still been running to my knowledge. It's as normal for her as anything else..so why stop I guess.

What if she had a naturally retarded baby.

Can you see how people would extrapolate that into "running marathons is bad for pregnancies"?

The fact that she had a healthy baby says "it's possible to run a marathon AND have a healthy baby"

but it's like saying "its possible to be fucking drunk off your ass and driving home safely and successfully"

That's what I would expect... Although if the pregnant woman was dieting to the point of going into ketosis, that is definitely bad for the baby's development.

i had a full term woman attending my spin class. good on her. it actually made me work even harder because if she was banging it out then i really had no excuse

also i know someone who taught full on step classes right up until she delivered. step class is way harder than spin imo

and anecdotally my mom exercised throughout her pregnancy with me and labor was pretty easy on her (relatively speaking). it only took 3 pushes. i hope im as lucky when it's my turn!
