After all these years, they still suck diseased dong? I'm seeing shit like this related to updating drivers:

JBaz is quickly approaching lewisje levels of quality with his Tech Talk posts lately. It would be great if most of the chit chat type posts were kept where they belong. 10/11/2011 10:40:49 PM |

Maybe the quality of responses would be better if the OP was of same quality. Crappy thread deserves crappy responses. Write like chit chat, receive chit chat dick responses. that is the tdub way.
Also, donno wtf u talking about my shitty posts in TT. It's mostly pretty good otherwise the one or two pissing posts. I try to keep chit chat away. But I couldn't help myself in this thread.

This is actually the problem. It isn't the low level drivers themselves per se, it's Control Center pukes when you try to run it. My quote from the OP is dealing with that. There is apparently a long running issue with ATI software (going back as early as '04 from my observation of the webernets) that they don't have any fucking idea how to manage their configuration such that you can just install Catalyst and have it work exactly right. You have to run all these third party tools to try and clean up old remnants of installs and hope the third party software gets all of it. I'm apparently in some sort of situation where the third party software isn't doing the job. I've seen other people claim if that isn't working you can go into the registry and start slashing away and maybe that will fix problems.
This is all sorts of fucked up and I'm blown away that this far into the graphics card game these guys still don't have their shit together.
All I really want to do is tweak the god damn overscan setting to make my HTPC fill out the entire window of my plasma. Thats it.10/12/2011 5:42:47 PM |

^ For some reason when I built my computer with an ATI card, Catalyst caused it to shit itself - I don't know if it's W7, particular programs, or what, but I've just uninstalled it and haven't looked back
Might be worth reinstalling if things have stabilized, but I haven't found myself in dire need of it thus far, so I'm alright with that. 10/12/2011 5:50:02 PM |

I'm not saying you will automatically have problems. I've got Catalyst on my box upstairs with Windows 7 Ult SP1 64 bit and no trouble. Catalyst on the same Windows install but with a different mobo and graphics adapter and I haven't been able to hold my mouth just right yet to get the shit to work.
Think I'm joking? Just look here on the front page for all the trouble people have with CCC
http://forums.amd.com/game/categories.cfm?catid=408&entercat=y
this is simply unacceptable and the ATI wing of AMD probably just needs to go ahead and die in a fire. 10/12/2011 6:13:28 PM |

Well I feel both vindicated and retarded all at once.
I'm fairly certain I didn't have directX installed and that is why Control Center wouldn't load. I don't game so there isn't any reason it would have been installed up to now. I'm still shocked that their stupid shitty software can't detect either at install time or when it tries to load that directx isn't anywhere to be found and let you know you might need it. I can only wonder if all those cases on the interwebs I found with people having the same problem is as simple as they didn't have it directx installed. 10/13/2011 7:09:33 PM |

Last two motherboards have ATI onboard graphics. Currently two desktops with ATI gpus.
Haven't had a single problem with AMD/ATI CCC for video or chipset drivers/config managers in several of years now.
Why would you have a discrete GPU and NOT have directx installed? DirectX comes preinstalled with windows 7. It's used by all kinds of shit besides gaming (hello multimedia). 10/13/2011 7:28:12 PM |

hmm, its entirely possible that I managed some combination of uninstalling and running third party apps to clean old driver remnants and deleting things in the C:\windows\assembly directory that actually fixed my problem, not directx. Rather than installing CCC all over again, seeing if it would work, then installing directx again and seeing if it would work, I did them both at once so I don't actually know which fixed it because I just want the shit to work...and now it does. 10/13/2011 8:00:00 PM |

As long as we're throwing out anecdotal evidence, I'm on my 3rd set of twin ATI cards (3 monitors regular, crossfire for gaming on the main one), and I've never had a problem. I still think it's awesome I can update video drivers and not restart, unlike my friend who has a reasonably current NVIDIA setup. 10/13/2011 9:16:12 PM |

I have all the issues that Chance has mentioned. It just plain doesn't work.ay I used drive sweeper but I must have fucked up, because I ended up having to restore the removed files. A site was saying to remove all the ATI files that show up on drive sweeper, I did, and well... yeah that was wrong.
Anyway, Catalyst refuses to work and I can't update it to the new drivers. It just refuses to work no matter what I remove or reinstall.
I love my ATI card but this whole thing is just recent for me, and it's really putting me off. 10/14/2011 1:06:21 AM |
