Don't feel bad. My likely wife-to-be said that she'd support me while I go back to school in 2014 and is okay with me just having a part time job along with doing a good bit of the housework.

I got married Saturday, they called a last minute "4th quarter readiness" meeting for Monday morning, I turn on my personal phone upon arriving in St Thomas and get a text from co-worker "hey man they are closing us...interviews for open positions are Thursday", its 1.99/min to call from there and not allowed to use company phone outside country, I was gonna miss the interviews, plus I spent $texas on the trip so wanted to enjoy it, come back the following Monday call HR, not really any comparable positions left in the area.

My company did not close, just the location I work at. Gotta go meet them to turn in all my crap and see if they are gonna throw me anything for severance in an hour.

One door closes, others open, not gonna sweat it. Just definitely caught me off guard. :/

Sucks to get bad news on your honeymoon, but hopefully they will give you some severance. Just look at it as a forced opportunity to upgrade your job.

pshh, laptop + wifi + Google Voice would've been $0. I did a phone interview over GV while in Australia last year.

congrats on the marriage, though

Concur...no laptops on honeymoon unless you're a CEO or vital position in the office.

Why wouldn't you take a laptop with you on your honeymoon? We took one with us and used it. It was very practical. We drove down to Florida and used the laptop to find interesting things to do and get directions. It was also nice to have a place to DL photos to and look at them at the end of the day.

I took my laptop....but not to call my employer, it was to look up things to do on the island and download pics off the cameras in case they got lost. (had a bad experience with a ton of pics that were only saved to an SD card once) The laptop ended up only working beside the pool and the internet sucked too bad to make VOIP calls without them dropping.

If I had it to do over again I still would not have called in ...it would have ruined the trip. The HR lady told me they had actually made it a point not to contact me during my vacation but she could not control my co-workers decision to tell me.

They did me pretty solid on the separation thing. I went in there like and left like.

That blows. But just think: now you can join the 99 percenters who also don't have a job.
