I ordered something online and they double charged me. I went back and forth with them for a couple days on getting the second charge dropped. Kind of pissed me off since it should have been an automatic "My bad we'll refund the second charge." Yesterday my item arrived which reminded me to check my card again to see if they refunded the second charge. Turned out they refunded both charges. Do I contact them to let them know their clerical error or do I just thank god I'll never do business with these incompetent morons ever again? 10/14/2011 9:33:12 AM

I personally would contact them one time and let them know what they did and they whether they correct it or not is on them.
I had a similar problem with dish network billing and they ended up giving me premium channels for free for as long as I had the service. I contacted them and let them know what was going on and then forgot about it. They didn't correct it and I had free premium channels until I ended up cancelling a couple years later. 10/14/2011 9:39:53 AM

how do you know the billing "error" was actually an error, and not a "we messed up, so in order to prove this isn't the norm, we'll give you your item for free"
not enough details for me to decide 10/14/2011 9:48:58 AM

If you had never checked your balance, and therefore never noticed that they double charged you, would they be calling you back going, "OOPS!!! Sorry, our bad. Listen, here is this money back!"
Noooooope.
So, if they wouldn't have extended you the courtesy, why should you give it to them in return? 10/14/2011 9:50:23 AM

I suppose it could have been that but you'd think they would send an email saying as much 10/14/2011 9:53:19 AM

I mean, that's your opinion and you're entitled to it, but I respectfully disagree.
It's my responsibility to check my statements to see if I've been overcharged for something. If I fail in this and get overcharged, tough titties on me.
It's a company's responsibility to make sure they're shipping and charging for their merchandise appropriately. If they fail to realize that they're giving goods or services away for free, that's their problem.
To me there is no ethical problem here, just a great example of good fortune. 10/14/2011 10:05:16 AM

I personally would feel morally obligated to say something, but I tend to hold guilt for a lot of things (even when I know I shouldn't) and it just makes me feel better not to have anything to feel guilty about. I also have the kind of luck that would get me that extra 75 bucks, and then I would have some emergency that would cost me that 75 bucks, plus some, and then the company would realize their mistake, and I'd lose another 75 bucks. 10/14/2011 10:11:56 AM

I feel as though my responce to this delima would be inpacted by how long they make me wait to talk to someone. If your going to make me wait 20 minutes, transfer me to 2 departments, and talk to POIakjdnao from OIPJD*INBSP then I say keep it 10/14/2011 12:29:00 PM

You know in your heart what the right thing is. Pay for the item once. That's just how it is. You'll feel better on the inside and it'll never weigh heavy on your mind because you did the right thing. If they explicitly tell you what they did was done purposely, then accept it. 10/14/2011 1:03:41 PM

I dont see the issue here. If you're an ethical person you call them and let them know, you pay for your shit unless they intend it as a gift. If you don't care about things like personal integrity then keep it. But chances are, if you're even having this dilemma then you're inclined toward honesty and should make them aware of the error.
And fhgqwgads...I am dissapoint. I don't know you in the least but my e-pinion of you has taken a hit 10/16/2011 4:15:19 AM

to OP I would call up and pay for the item via customer service, but request a discount on account of their mistake and your integrity. 10/24/2011 3:33:35 PM

Just another note... I've seen companies make a mistake in their billing, then realize the mistake during end-of-month audits and end up charging you later when you're not expecting it. You could take the "oh well, if they catch it, they catch it" approach, but I don't like ANYONE to have a legal right to my checking account or credit card any longer than is necessary.
Interesting sidenote: those people saying "it's their fault for not realizing their mistakes"... I wonder if they would be outraged if the scenario I just outlined actually played out a month down the road. 10/24/2011 3:38:32 PM
