IIRC global population growth is actually decelerating; it took 12 years (1987-1999) to go from 5-6 billion, then 12 years (1999-2011) to go from 6-7 billion, and it's estimated to take 14 or 15 years to go to 8 billion, then 9 billion will be reached around 2050, the population will peak shortly afterward at a little over 9 billion, and finally the global population will slowly decline as it ages amid decreasing fertility rates.

The stress on our old-age insurance system that will be coming to us, and already has started happening in Europe and Japan, will surely afflict everyone by mid-century.
