I'm looking for a 1 or 2 decent apartment in Raleigh for a family member. It doesn't have to be near campus, in fact her job is northeast Raleigh so something north of downtown might be best. I'd like the complex to be relatively safe...which I would assume is possible in this price range.

Try Driftwood Manor ... Its a safe area and its RIGHT on the beltline, so getting to north raleigh is pretty quick.

Typical 2/3 bedroom condos/townhomes rent for 550-750.

I'm looking for a one bedroom place too and would like recommendations. It would be me and the girlfriend, and it wouldn't be important to be near NCSU, but it would be nice to be within the beltline (JUST BECAUSE) or at least around it.

Besides apartment complexes (which you should still recommend if you know any good ones) I'm interested if anyone knows some good areas to troll for individual or privately owned properties that may be renting but aren't on the internet. I know it's sort of "look where you want to live" but I've been pretty confined to South West Raleigh in the time I've been here.

there are a lot of houses in oakwood that have been turned into apartments, but aren't immediately obvious.

i don't know why more people don't live in oakwood.

^I honestly don't know or subscribe to this view, but isn't there some kind of stereotype about low-income housing in Oakwood, or is that still farther out and I'm just wrong? I know the western side of Oakwood is a bunch of upscale historic houses and the cemetery, but I don't know much else. Isn't the Mordecai neighborhood to the north?

If there's some places worth looking for in here, I will look around. I'm just not immediately familiar with that part of downtown.

I'm sort of in the same boat but can go a little higher in rent 850 or so. I'm open to the crabtree area, cary around walnut, s.e. maynard, etc.


Anyone familiar with the Trails of North Hills on n. hills drive by crabtree, or the pointe at crabtree on duraleigh? Thoughts on either?


^ oakward is right on the fringe imo. a few blocks in either direction can make a big difference. But I'm looking at some places in that area.

I live in the 5 points area just off whitaker mill and it's a quick shot to capital/glenwood/six forks and downtown. I rent my 1 br for $595 and I think there is a two bedroom across the street but i'm not sure how much they want. It's 1618 Sunrise avenue I think, there's a for rent sign with a phone number. might want to check it out.

I rented a 1 BR in Cary (Misty Woods) for $450. It wasn't special by any means, but served the purpose. Especially for the price. Of course, that was nearly 10 years ago, so my advice probably isn't worth much.

yeah, basically. the closer you are to peace street the nicer it is. past the cemetery it gets rough fast, but before there it's awesome.

dgspencer I'd really like to find a place in the Five Points area, but I get a little lost once I get off the main roads--the residential areas confuse me a little. Do you have any recommendations for finding a place? I'm under the impression a lot of rental units won't be online, so just driving through the neighborhoods would be the best bet.

^i lived in clarion crossing for a couple years. it was ok. overpriced but good/quick maintenance. and they have a pool. you have to provide your own washer/dryer though, or bring lots of quarters. they probably have a card system now though. no towing in the parking lot though, which was a PLUS considering i came from u-woods where the parking nazis roam freely.when the sun goes down.

Me either, if you can find an affordable place I would recommend it. I rented a 2br house there last year in the "good" part for $800/mo. Granted the place was 80 years old and needed some work (actually got foreclosed on while I was there which gave me 3 mo free rent) but there were always places popping up around me reasonably priced. You do get occasional foot traffic so definitely lock your car.

I heard clarion went to shit recently due to new management. got super ghetto and the like.

as for alternatives, I'd just look around in the area you want to live and see if there are any "for rent" signs. a lot of landlords just do that rather than advertise. I'd stalk craigslist too. A lot of places put up specials that aren't on their website. I got my apartment that way for like $50 cheaper than what the site said the places rent for.

the technician is a good place to look too. I heard to stay away from the preiss company at all costs from friends, personally never used them so i can't verify if that's warranted or not.

Yeah, I live at Concord Apartments right off of Duraleigh, about 1 mile north of Edwards Mill Rd and only pay $545/mo. My 1BR is pretty small but it's all I need. Actually has a huge balcony, considering the size of the apt.

For the most part this would be the most productive... it can be confusing because so many roads loop around but if you drive in one direction long enough you'll either hit fairview, wade, glenwood, or whitaker mill so it's not too bad. I live on Sunrise Avenue and there was one place that got rented recently and then the one I just linked to has a for rent sign out. There's also a Preiss one bedroom I think right on Whitaker mill near sunrise for rent. It really just takes some due diligence, there's a lot of overpriced stuff out here but a lot of deals at the same time.

Can you tell me more about the concord apartments? I looked at them this morning. I'm looking at 2 bedrooms.

My initial experience with the office staff wasn't great. Not horrible, but not the most professional imo.

How are they to deal with? Any maintenance issues or anything like that? Issues with parking (she said there was 1 assigned space for each apartment). Any input would be appreciated because I like the area, the space, and the price all well enough.

Yeah, I haven't really had any issues at all with the front office. I'm guessing there may be other places where people are more professional but they've always seemed a little more laid back, so maybe that has something to do with it.

I've never had any maintenance issues that weren't handled well. Once, my hot water heater was leaking like crazy and it was replaced within an hour of me making the call.

Never had any issues with parking but I'm in a 1br. Having only 1 parking spot with two adults in a 2br seems like it would be a pain in the ass. Having said that, there are plenty of visitor spots to be had, at least in the area surrounding my apt.

The only thing I will say, is that they seem a little anal about "storing" anything on your balcony. For instance, they told me I had to bring my bag of charcoal inside. If it doesn't qualify as patio furniture or a plant then technically it can't be out there. They haven't said anything about my cornhole boards yet though.

Parking probably wouldn't be an issue for me, it would just be me in the 2 bedroom (i just want the extra space to work on projects and maybe a blow up mattress or something if needed).

i lived in concord apartments from 2008-2009 and can't really complain. i was in the smallest 1 br floor plan, which definitely small, but it wasn't too expensive. the balcony was really big and the complex was quiet. i never had an issue with guest parking, despite the assigned spots. i thought the location was pretty good as well.

my biggest complaint was that cell phone service was really really bad due to where it was situated. this might have been fixed though.

We've checked a couple of the places mentioned, no decision yet though.

^^^My experience has been identical. Liked the location, small floor plan is, well, small but affordable. The balcony is seriously almost as big as the living room. Cell service still sucks here, but if I sit on the edge of my couch, leaning at a 45 degree angle toward the pool I do okay.

^^^ you'll get charged more for short-term lease, keep that in mind. I have seen quite a few subleases for that time frame. apartments and actual houses. So it may worth keeping an eye out for those too on padmapper, craiglist, etc.

Just wanted to mention that there are quite a few rental units interspersed amongst the Condos north and East of Cameron Village. The ones along the west side of Daniels Street are 1 bedroom units, small (566 sq ft.) but great location and generally well kept. I lived in one of those from 2004 to 2007 and, other than not having a dishwasher, it was a nice little place. Think I only paid $475/mo but that was 5+ years ago.

The ones to the east of CV along Nichols/Bellwood/St. Mary's are primarily 2-bedroom apartments and townhouses. A lot are privately owned but there are some rentals mixed in as well. Those are nice too. And it's a good area overall.

I found some more apartments in this range, Grand Arbor Reserve on Lake Boone Trail near 440. Haven't been out to see them to say much more than that. My guess is they're much older apartments considering the space for the price.

EDIT: i thought i lived at grand arbor reserve, but i actually lived at the villages which is right next door. i lived there pre-renovations when it was called landmark. it should fall into the cheap apartment discussion. (at least it did when i lived there)

good things
no problem parking, no assigned spaces.
good cell reception
huge apartments. I think my 2 br was like 1100 sq ft. (i only paid $550/month, which was only $25 more than concord at the time for double the sq ft)
a lot of two story units that don't share walls with any others just floor/ceiling
good location, comparable to concord but closer to the belt line.
cheap

bad
crazy amounts of bugs in and around the apartments. seriously it was kind of bad looking back.
sort of ghetto, at least it was pre-renovation, i had a crazy neighbor that involved the cops from time to time
old heating/cooling units in seemingly not very well insulated apartments led to $texas power bills
really poor drainage around a lot of the bottom units so there is a lot of walking through puddles when it rains.

potential positives/negatives
lots of immigrants, mostly hispanic, so there is a lot of loud spanish music on the weekends and there is a mexican ice cream cart with music that tours the complex a lot.

that being said, aside from the one crazy neighbor i really liked living there. really convenient location, tons of space, and most of the residents had families and kept to themselves. definitely sort of ghetto, but i liked it. my wife however, said she never would've lived there. i'm sure it has gotten better since the renovations. if i had to do it again, i'd probably live there again (assuming it was still cheap), but i would treat the apartment and area around it for bugs myself in addition to whatever was done by the complex.

check out trails of north hills. It's on North Hills drive right off of Lead Mine rd. (walking distance to crabtree mall/the belt line). I looked at a 2bd there for like 770 (including cable). 1bd was starting at 619/mo when i checked it out. The 2bdrm has washer/dryer hook-ups. not sure about the 1bdroom

Concord apartments off of Duraleigh had a 1bd starting at 585 (it was only 501sqft) -- up to 2bd 2ba w/sunroom (1107sf) for 735. --- have washer/dryer hookups and offer Washer/Dryer rental for 75/mo. has dishwasher on floor plan.

Highlands on duraleigh had a 1bdroom starting at $725. That was the nicest of those i've listed so far. You have to be at least 25 (i think that's the age) to rent there. Has washer/dryer hook-ups. Definitely has dish washer.

The Reserve at Lake Lynn is probably right there (there were 745 for a 2bd) -- I think it has direct access to Lake Lynn, but am not certain. MOst of them have washer/dryer hook-ups, but not all models.

The Regatta at Lake Lynn is probably at the higher end of that range for a 1bd. Has direct access to Lake Lynn. Had Dishwasher, full-size washer/dryer hookups. 9' or vaulted ceilings. Walk-in closets.

The Pointe at Crabtree (off of Duraleigh rd.) was 680 or 705 for their 1bed rooms (685 and 787 sqft, respectively). --- The apartments are nice. 9' ceilings, walk-in closets, washer and dryer hook-ups. Ceiling fans included. -- I'm certain they had dishwashers.

And Cumberland Cove had 3 1bd models starting at 659, 679, and 764. Has direct access to Lake Lynn. Has washer and dryer hook ups. New models definitely had high ceilings, not sure about the older models.


These prices are all from about a month ago, but they're probably still in that ball park. Cumberland Cove (depending on the model), The Pointe, and Highlands were the "nicest" of those imo. The Reserve was the least worst of the bunch.

Trails of North Hills and Concord had the best bang for the buck if you'd like some space. The newer models of the Cumberland Cove apartments were my favorite I think. But they were also a good bit more expensive. I ended up renting a house. But I would have been good with any of these but the Reserve (only because I thought all of the others were nicer overall).

Laruel Oaks also had a large 1bd (around 950sqft) for about 670.

There are a few other places around Leesville/lynn rd/ray rd. too. I looked at some but just didn't care for them too much.

these all had dishwashers and washer/dryer hook ups... at least I'm pretty sure they all did. They may be one that didn't. But I have my own washer and dryer so I don't it would have made my short list if it didn't have hook ups. Some offered washer/dryer rentals as well if you didn't have your own.

Really, see if you can find something in the Cameron Village Condos (phase 1, the 2br units east of CV). Great area and they have, or at least have hookups for, dishwasher and w/d. In the one unit I've been in the washer and dryer were in the kitchen (there are tradeoffs to an older place) but they were full-size units.
