I'm doing some business research and there are a million "what is this website worth" sites out there and I'm getting immensely varying quotations for each one I'm doing.
Which one of these things is most accurate? 10/27/2011 1:43:41 PM |

Whats it worth to you and whats it worth to someone else are VERY DIFFERENT...
So, to put it in perspective ... on the marketplace, its probably only going to sell for 1x - 2x yearly profits, the latter if its legitimate, unique content and someone automated, the former if it requires regular work on the part of the owner to keep it up/write content/etc.
I bought a site recently for 35k that brings in about 28k per year profit, but is fully automated.
Obviously some other factors can come in to play (how old it is, SEO cred, age, PR, traffic), but all else (ie, how much you spent getting someone to design it) is pretty irrelevant.
Just my experience from buying/selling on Flippa.com and owning a few different sites up til now. 10/27/2011 5:47:24 PM |

^^ it's interesting that you say creation price is not a concern. how long of a period do you look back for reliable data and how do you go about getting it? i mean first glance at that website and there's one where the guy says it makes 200,000 a year although it has gone down 50% twice in the past. How do you know he's telling the truth? 10/27/2011 10:18:08 PM |

Due Diligence ...
For the site I just bought, I required google analytics access and adsense access, so that I could really dig into the traffic sources, organic referrals, visitor loyalty, etc.
Because he was a legitimate seller, all those things were easily accessible. Also, once the sale closed, we used escrow.com to hit target milestones, with delivery dates, and once everything had been moved over to my ownership, and the domain pushed to my godaddy account/registered in my name, the funds were released.
It was a pretty smooth experience. Of course, I devour the information to look for anything that has red flags, and when I see them, I don't look at the listing a second time.
Its an extremely profitable opportunity if you know what kinds of sites to look for and what price is reasonable. Otherwise, you will pay alot for a junk site, or loose the bid to someone else because you werent willing to bid what it was worth.
I am actually expanding my purchasing, and putting together a group/fund of sorts, located offshore, to act as a holding company for a bunch of sites. I am looking for investors to join me and 3 others, and targeting $240k initial investment in total. There are some great sites for sale in the 150k profit/year range, and I have some good ideas of how to grow them. 10/27/2011 10:30:44 PM |
