What do I need to know to make sure a power adapter by different companies match up?

For example:

My subwoofer died and I think it's the power adapter's fault.

The specs on the adaptor are:
Creative I.T.E. Power Supply
Model: UA-1450
Input: 120V ~ 60Hz 1000mA
Output: 13.5V ~ 5A

It looks like this:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Creative-I-T-E-Power-Supply-UA-1450-13-5VAC-5A-WORKS-/180707728431?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a13051c2f

Price: $42.99 + 16.99 shipping.

However this one:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/CREATIVE-UA-1450-UA1450-AC-ADAPTER-13-5VAC-5A-POWER-SUPPLY-/280743353426?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item415d9b9c52

looks different but has the same model number UA-1450. The price is much better

Price: $9.97 + $9.99

How do I guarantee these both are interchangeable?

The second one you posted gives a voltage of 14-16V@ 4-5 A. Yours is 13.5V @5 A.

In all likelihood, you would be fine with the $10 replacement. I would be more concerned about it being a piece of shit that will last 6 months and fry your shit.
