"one year on the front lines of the Battle to Save Detroit"

I couldn't find this by any search of Burn or Detroit Fire, so hopefully it's not a double post. / old

"Detroit is the city of the future.

Either it's going to rise from the ashes,

or every other city is going to end up like we are.

We get to decide."

- Toby Barlow, New York Times

Larger than Manhattan, San Francisco, and Boston combined.

Unemployment: 29%

Illiteracy: 50%

Unsolved Murders: 50%

Pop 1950: 1,800,000
Pop 2000: 900,000

"on one street 60 of 66 houses abandon"

"partial month of fires, 500 right now"

"95 percent of what I do is arson" - Firefighter

Q Is the film finished?

A The film is 95% shot, and 70% funded. As long as we can raise our finishing funds, we are on track to deliver the film for a Spring 2012 festival premiere! We need your support!

Q How can I see the film once it’s completed?

A We post frequently to Facebook and will continue to send updates to our donors and subscribers as production develops. We will let you know when the film opens in theaters or airs on TV. Subscribe to our e-mails HERE. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter to keep up to date!

Q Are donations tax deductible?

AWe’ve been running a tax-deductible campaign for some time, with meager results. Our current fundraising campaign with Kickstarter, which is based on pledges and premiums, can’t handle tax-deductible donations.

You won’t be eligible for any of the Kickstarter incentives, but you’re welcome to make a tax-deductible donation here: https://www.fracturedatlas.org/site/contribute/donate/3688

"There have been some places where you come out afterwards and discovered the building was designed to kill Firemen. You should have bought it there." - Firefighter, talking towards city

I think the Commissioner is right. Fuck those houses. If nobody is in danger, the building is abandoned, and it will not bother neighboring occupied or maintained residences, then controlled burn is the way to go.

Honestly if somebody was smart, they could make money for the city by using this for a revenue stream. Currently fire departments have to wait until a house is abandoned, donated, etc. for the chance to do a controlled burn. Somebody should get some of the fire department equipment together and setup a for profit division that generates revenue for the fire department by doing live burn training. Other cities and volunteer fire departments could send their firefighters to Detroit to practice with these abandoned buildings. In the end it eliminates the eyesore and arson danger of tons of abandoned houses, it gets rid of them very cheaply, and it allows the fire department to generate income. Even if it doesn't net the city itself income, it could at least help the FD to offset losses from budget cuts. I don't think anybody would complain.

they would have to classify every sq male of Detroit first.

Into what they will stop from burning and what they will let burn; a pretty shitty line to have to live near, which in turn devalues the property and brings on a danger.

Detroit 6000:

...he's white. In downtown Detroit he is in a 1 to 9 ratio (to black).

^^^^They would not be able to do that. If an arsonist sets off a building, the conditions at the time would warrant whether it would be justified to fight it or merely contain it. If it is during a dry summer and you have high winds with nearby structures, then you need to fight it to keep it from spreading. If it is sitting by itself, on a wet calm day, then contain only. But the variables for houses can change by the side of the street. Many houses may already be gone, so a block could have multiple houses that are no longer near others. Legally the city probably has not been collecting taxes on these properties, so the simple thing would be to just repossess it unless back taxes are paid. Hell some property owners may like this, as they get that shitty house off their property for free, lowering their tax value, and at the same time saving them demo costs. If somebody is adamant that they not have it torched, then as long as property taxes are paid up, who cares.

seriously they're just gonna burn it all? why not demolish them and harvest the wood and other materials? creates both jobs and revenue for the city

Because probably what you'd get out of the average dilapidated building wouldn't begin to cover the costs of demolition. I'm sure meth heads have stripped them of anything worthwhile to sell.

^Exactly. Half these homes are run down, trashed, leaking shitboxes. I would assume many of these buildings have substantial wood rot. That is not the kind of conditions a company would pay anything to go in and harvest, because your wood is just old rotted shit. The types of wood you can recover are solid oak beams and things of that sort, which would not be used in construction like this. Most of that you would find in big old textile mills and places that need heavier wood. This flimsy shit they built those houses and covered with lead paint with has gone to hell. There is no way to make new anything out of that. Burn it or bulldoze it.

I was thinking more along the lines of salvaging/recycling the fixtures and appliances and hauling the rest to an incinerator where the heat is put to some sort of use

Not trying to save a bunch of rotted plywood and treated pine
