Why do people have such a hardcore hatred for rap music? Is it driven by some sort of subconscious racism? I know quite a few people who I consider very tolerant and open minded but they HATE rap. To me their hatred goes beyond a simple dislike for the music and gets kind of weird and over the top.

lol you called it "rap music"

also, most people hate it because of the strong dominance of rhythm over melody, as well as questionable (and sometimes downright irritating) lyrical content.

most people hate it because they suspect the descriptions of environment may have a shred of truth to them

who wants to be exposed to the shitty consequences of our systematic racism

^^

Maybe they hate rap to strongly because every time someone asks you if you like rap and you say no, they feed you all this bullshit about how close-minded you are and how rap is just too "real" for some people.

Honestly, it's the same reason I'm so strongly opposed to hybrids<http://thewolfweb.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=620223>. Has nothing to do with the vehicle...

Edit: For the record, I like a lot of 'rap' (pretty broad category) out there, but it's really obnoxious when you have this community of individuals who acts like if you don't like rap that you're racist and just not 'real' enough to handle it. Newsflash: some people just simply don't like rap. Stop lecturing people about it and maybe they'll stop being so violently against it.

i don't care if people like rap or not
however it's funny to see peoples' fundamentally racist reactions to it and the thin veils they use to cover their shame

I don't care if people like rap or not. It's the people who say it isn't "real music" who get on my nerves.

Over the past year I may have listened to hip hop and rap more than any other genre.
That said, there are some pretty glaring issues with the industry and the culture as a whole. I can see why people would be turned off; especially if their only exposure was to the stuff that gets the most airplay these days. Furthermore, I can understand why a lot of the stuff I like would not appeal to everybody.

I don't think anybody would even ask this question if it were about country, hardcore, or metal; so I don't see why rap should get special status. It just doesn't appeal to everyone. AxlBonBach made some good points as well.

country, hardcore, and metal are all subgenres of rock music, an umbrella just as large as rap

Country is a sub-genre of rock?
If you had argued that most of the big acts fit into the pop category more so than country I might give you that, but country as derived from folk/western is definitely not in the rock genre.

But alas, there are plenty of people in this country who would say they hate rock and roll; so the point still stands.

I disagree on your described parentage of country but that's kinda beside the point really. Yes, some people don't like rock and roll, and they're mostly geriatrics who think it's "Jungle Music"

not saying that the following reasons apply to all of rap or only rap, but of the music I know, several of the below items tend to be found in many rap songs and mostly in rap songs, as opposed to other genres

- perpetuating racism
- condone violence
- condone rape
- condone theft/stealing
- condone other various crimes
- enforce the idea that gross fashion is cool (i.e. sagging)
- lack of singing
- perpetuating the idea that young black males must be 'tough'/'hood'/have street cred/etc.
- stupid songs/lyrics (i.e. superbass)
- lack of good instrumentation

you know, this might be me, though i don't claim to HATE rap, i just (generally) don't like it (in that there is some that i DO like...just not much)

i'm a huge fan of instrumentation, and the utter lack of this, in addition to (generally) unimaginative lyrics, leave me bored if not completely turned off

i'm not saying that rap doesn't require talent...it's just not talent i can appreciate (which isn't to say i don't respect it, either)

it takes talent to yodel, too, but that doesn't mean i have any desire to listen to it...same thing

dude so does heavy metal and pop music

personally, i think hip hop music is amazing, since theres no reliance on the talent of singing, it becomes a matter of vocabulary and cadence

and then the whole concept of production and how beats are made and the knowledge these producers have of all genres to create great samples from the least noticeable tidbits of the most obsolete songs. all genres have their shitty music and all genres have music that are great for certain situations

your post was insinuating that I don't believe such qualities exist in country music, which is not true.
