I guess you guys know what I'm talking about-

I found a monster-sized Dell XPS here at work that I might utilize to do some office gruntwork.

It's at least a 17 inch monitor, and it stays put when you open it, but it flops around.

Like at the end of its "monitor travel" it's like it has a big dead zone of at least 1 inch where there is no friction/resistance to keep it from moving.

I've seen other laptops do this and its always bothered me, but how do you cure it? Is this something I can do myself or should I take it to a shop? Hell, could campus tech support fix it?

Figured I'd throw it out there- thanks in advance!

Most likely, you would need to replace the hinge hardware; however, if you get it opened up, there is a nut on the hinge that *might* be able to be tightened.

If you can follow instructions forward and reverse, you can try looking at Dell's website and downloading the technical manual for your particular model. This will at least give you a ballpark on the complexity...I replaced a set of hinges and lid on an Inspiron and it was ~45 min...your mileage may vary.

eBay is flooded with replacement parts, just look for reputable sellers and you should be good to go.
