I just read the same article. What a sweet looking little girl too. Isn't 10 a little too early for the extreme bullying or thoughts of suicide? This is just so sad.

Damn, that's terrible. How can you even hang yourself at that age? And I can't even imagine the extent of the cruelty that would drive a 10 year old to hang herself.

Children are horrible. 90% of bullies are made due to bad/neglectful/abusive parenting. I really wish there was some test to pass before people were allowed to make children. Anyway, I am speaking to the air here, as TWW is full of horrible bullies who derive pleasure from mocking others in with extremely hurtful words... if they mock others at this age, chances are very high they were also bullies in school.

BTW, this doesn't compute:

Quote :
"Jasmine was picked on at Chadbourne Elementary School, West said, noting other children teased her about her clothes or her shoes. She left the school for a while and dreaded having to return about a month ago, her mother said.

"It's a shame that kids are that cruel. It really is," West said, noting that she never knew how badly Jasmine had been tormented."

If she didn't know the extent of the torment, why did she allow her 10 year old to leave school "for a while"?

When I was about that age a girl in my school attempted suicide. It happens.

i dont understand how many times this has to happen before bullies are made afraid of being bullies.

instant expulsion should do the trick.

...and a 10 year old is plenty old enough to form the thought "death is a release."

Yes, they know it's going on, and no, they don't care.

No one ever talks about the torment that the Columbine shooters endured, but I bet the survivors didn't harass anyone else during their time in high school.

School administrators have the ability to put an end to bullying.

imagine if this girl had grown up and her co-workers were mean to her. she would have probably gone crazy and shot up her workplace and then killed herself anyway. these bullies saved lives and should be commended.

^^^^^ I guess? My parents actually cared for me and knew what I was doing. What should I have been doing? If Facebook would have been around I guarantee I wouldn't have been on it.

Slow development or not... I now contribute positively to society and I give my parents a lot of credit for that.

in most cases i'd be willing to bet, bullying like this consists not of one individual constantly and savagely harassing another individual, but more likely the subtle and even not so subtle (but not quite to the level of requiring discipline from a teacher, let alone expulsion) remarks and treatment by many dozens of her peers.

^ This. And the children will often not tell their parents about the extent of the bullying, if they tell them at all.

I live (and teach) in Columbus County and this news has hit the community hard.

I know that article is claiming multiple accusations of bullying but word around here is also pointing towards possible abuse at home.

And as far as the comments about teachers ignoring bullying then I would say that is completely false. We have all be informed of our personal and professional liability when it comes to bullying. It is an EXTREMELY serious issue at the school I work for. I know teachers who have even set up their laptop cameras to record students and possible instances of bullying.

The problem is that so much of the bullying happens outside of a direct classroom in places like the lunchroom, playground/gym, group work, hallways, bathrooms, buses, etc. Although teachers are there and watching it is impossible to see and hear it all. The sad thing is that kids cannot escape the bullying anymore. There is no safe haven at home because their peers follow them there through facebook and texting. I cannot begin to count the times drama and general bullying has been an issue through facebook at my school.

I don't think I could have even talked to news if I was her mother, unless they just wanted to film me crying hysterically. RIP Jasmine. I hope she finally found her peace.

end through the buckle to create the noose, tie the end off on the top bunk/clothing rack/ceiling fan. head through the noose, step off the chair, kick it away...

gruesome, but entirely possible.

poor kid.

Maybe things have changed, but I can guarantee you when I was in school (Asheville City and Buncombe County) there were teachers who actively looked the other way on bullying.

Exactly! Me too. Crazy thing is, in the video on that link, her mother wasn't even crying and didn't seem too upset or sad AT ALL actually. Hmmm.....maybe I'm wrong, but I would be investigating her. Plus, how did she not know this was going on?!?!?! COMMUNICATION failure, obviously. So sad.

it's teacher's not parents fault, I wasn't one of the most bullied kids but from my experience the majority of it could be stopped if teachers didn't turn a blind eye, as for parents the kid can totally mask their feeling and only need a few minutes alone to kill themselves

^^you don't really think some moral lecture or speech from the bullies' parents is really going to effect what they do at school? the kid will just bs some answer and keep doing it

you've got to be 20-30 yrs away from being a kid to be that out of touch

the teachers can't stop it all but they are the only ones who are in position to stop some of it at least

I had some pretty stupid teachers through the years. Kids used to pick on each other and yell at each other in math class in 6th grade and the teacher didn't even notice. She was really strange. We also had a substitute teacher that worked at my middle school who would fall asleep in class while we were doing our school work.

I don't get why teachers would turn a blind eye

only reason that I can think of is teachers are afraid to discipline kids b/c of the backlash from parents. (where was that thread on parent's versus teachers)

poor parenting + teachers who turn the other way = horrible outcomes.

Do you people not remember what it was like to be a child, snitches get stitches was ingrained in to my peers and I by a very young age. You just didn't tell the teacher that things were happening. I mean how many of you got away with shit because no one caught you doing it.

And honestly no parent wants to believe that their child might be a monster on the playground. That and the general everyone gets in trouble when there is a fight tends to lead to the kids that get picked on not getting taken as seriously when they do come forward while being afraid to stand up for themselves because of how a bunch of in school suspensions would look.

tl;dr version The flaw in the system is that there is no good choice when being bullied. Fight back, get in trouble; tell someone, get shunned by peers; do nothing and it has the chance of escalating anyway.

This is a tragedy as all suicide is. My heart goes out to her family and I hate to hear that this girl felt the need to resort to this.

If this were one of our own people would be all LOL and pwnt.

Just for future reference, at what age are we supposed to disregard compassion for our fellow man on here again?

Supposedly no evidence of bullying has been found so far by the school or the police:

I'm working really hard not to lay some serious blame on the mother here.

because what other kids in elementary school think about you is the MOST IMPORTANT thing in life!!!

it's sad that it was a kid, but being made fun of for your clothes or shoes is some first world problem bullshit. i'm thinking she just wanted to be popular and couldn't figure out the angle so she gave up.

I'm willing to bet everyone ITT has been hounded at one point in time or another for their choice in dress, style, personal look, etc.

yet you're all still here

Isn't part of the education you pick up in school learning how to deal with a wide spectrum of social situations? People will pick at you and make fun of you for stupid shit your whole life. Learning how to deal with it is part of growing up.

Exactly. When my grandfather was killed I don't think I cried at all. Was just really numb to the situation. If anyone had interviewed me during that time maybe they would have thought I was the killer

This can be part of it. I had a student in one of my classes that was a raging, violent douchebag. But nobody at the school wanted to do anything about him because it was well-known in the town that his father was an even bigger raging, violent douchebag. When the kid did finally get ISS the father threatened to burn the school down

Little bit of a difference between your 10 year old daugter committing suicide in your own home and a grandparent dying of more natural causes.
