I live three doors down from where this took place last night:

http://www.newsobserver.com/2011/11/17/1652182/wake-deputy-suspect-injured-in.html

Interesting tidbits, for those who don't click links on principle:

Quote :
"Brian Buckner, who lives at 207 Gail Ridge Lane, said he was at home around 7:40 p.m. when Diane Zareski knocked on his door. She had been beaten, Buckner said, and was bleeding so badly that she left blood on his front porch and in his kitchen.

"She said, 'He wouldn't let me go, he wouldn't let me go. Finally I escaped,'" Buckner said.

Buckner called 911, but before deputies could arrive, Zareski shot several times at Bucker's house. So, he called 911 a second time and told them to hurry."

Quote :
"Buckner said that the deputies parked near some pine trees and when he went out to meet them, Zareski began shooting again from the house."

Quote :
"Neighbors described Zareski (56) as a quiet man, who lived with his wife (28) and elementary school-aged daughter."

Their daughter was not home at the time, thankfully.

Crazy night.

last i saw, he was listed in critical condition.

at the beginning of the whole thing, we heard two shots, about 30 seconds apart. i thought, "man, people aren't supposed to be hunting after dark!" and then POP POP POP

"oh man...that's not good."

then sporadic gunfire for about 3 or 4 minutes, then four shots back to back

then no mo' shots.

I will be bringing up the .357 that my dad left me this weekend.

And a shotgun is on the list of things to purchase very soon.

on a nonfirearm related note, domestic violence makes me

it's weird because you NEVER think "oh man, there could definitely be a shootout in my neighborhood sometime,"

but i guess there are unstable people everywhere.

I plan on trying to find a good deal on a used 12ga. at a pawn shop/local gun store. Going to Goldsboro this weekend anyway, so no gunshow for me

I was saying last night to my wife that I'd much rather hear about a shootout with deputies than read a "Local Man Kills Wife, Self" headline

actually, no, I wouldnt. Think about all of the possible collateral damage - id rather some raging fool do the damage inside his house.... than have a fucking O.K. Corral shootout across the neighborhood and possibly hit me, my gf, my dog or my other un-involved neighbors.

....still, gecha gun and prepare

hit the various pawn shops around goldsboro. the sticker prices will be a little high, but you should be able to talk them down into the $250 price range like wdprice3 said

four seasons has been around a while and the guys there are very knowledgable. their selection is somewhat limited, but their prices are competitive. after shipping and everything, they generally don't make much money at all on firearms. they make their money on the ammo and accessories you pick up with the gun. i've been told their gunsmith is good, too. i actually bought my first gun off their consignment rack. well, my dad bought it with my money b/c i was 16 at the time.

if you want to shoot clays, i would suggest either a dedicated home defense shotgun or an 18-20" barrel that you can swap out. it's very simple and takes about 5 minutes. the shorter bbl will greatly improve your mobility in a home defense situation. remember, pumps and automatics are about 6" longer than a break action shotgun of the same bbl length.

this is why over/unders are generally better for clay shooting. the shorter length makes it easier to swing. if i were you, i would get a dedicated HD shotgun w/ a 18-20" bbl and then save up for a reasonably priced O/U for clay games.

yeh, having a <20" bbl for HD is much better. the barrel length does make a big difference within HD scenarios. if you want to shoot clays and only have 1 shotgun, I recommend just getting a second barrel.

I recommend a pistol and a shotgun. That way the wife can tote the shotty (she can spray and pray, so accuracy is not such a big deal) and a pistol for you. We have a BBL 20 gauge for the bosslady to use around the house and I have a Glock 26 for CC and personal HD.

i wouldn't use "spray" to describe a shotgun pattern at HD ranges. the pattern will be no bigger than the expected groups you would get from most pistols.[i]

[Edited on November 18, 2011 at 12:21 PM. Reason : accuracy (really more aiming) is a very big deal with a shotgun]

[Edited on November 18, 2011 at 12:21 PM. Reason : hey, let's both go confront this intruder so we can both die]

I got mine with a soft case for $25.
I know what everybody is thinking so I'll go ahead and fill in the rest of the story. A guy who had absolutely zero interest in having guns in his home inherited them and just wanted them gone. He probably would have given them to me to be honest.

I’ve been drivin‘ all night my hand’s wet on the wheel
There’s a voice in my head that drives my heel
And my baby calls that she needs me here
It’s half past four and I’m shifting gear

When she gets lonely and the longing gets too much
She sends a cable comin‘ in from above
We don’t need to talk at all

We got a thing that’s called radar love
We got a wave in the air
Radar Love

Radio’s playin‘ some forgotten song
Brenda Lee’s coming on strong
The road has got me hypnotized
And I’m spinning into a new sunrise

When I get lonely and I’m sure I’ve had enough
She sends her comfort coming in from above
We don’t need a letter at all

We got a thing that’s called radar love
We got a line in the air
Radar Love

[Jammin Solo]

No more speed I’m almost there
Gotta keep cool now, gotta take care
Last car to pass here I go
And the line of cars goes down real slow

And the radio played some forgotten song
Brenda Lee’s coming on strong
And the newsman sang his same song
Oh one more radar lover gone

When I get lonely and I’m sure I’ve had enough
She sends her comfort coming in from above
We don’t need a letter at all

We got a thing that’s called radar love
We got a line in the sky
We got a thing that’s called radar love
We got a thing that’s called radar love
