The older I get the more I realize how silly it is that people use such a term. Clearly the people who fit in this category have significant admixture other than sub-sarahan african, yet we continue to classify them as black. Why is it? Think about it, Obama's kids are < 3/4ths black and they don't even meet the "light skinned mark".

What spawned all of this is that this weekend I went to visit a "black" friend I've had since I was young. His mom was white and his father was "black", which, given the frequency of admixture, makes it very likely he was < 50% black. Now he has a child, with a white woman, and when we went to visit his sister in law mentioned how great a cultural experience it will be for her son go grow up with a "black" cousin and a "black side" of the family.

Where do we draw the line? At what point do people stop being "black"

Maybe I suggested something that I did not intend to suggest, EMCE I wasn't saying that they're better because regardless of being white or black I don't think anyone is better. My point was more so that even when it is identifiable that someone is not entirely black (such as "light skinned" that both "whites" and "blacks" say that the person is black.

To me, thats where the racism comes into play. That even when someone is more white than black they can't join the club of being white.

depends on what you define black as. people say obama is black. nobody is 100% african besides immigrants and their decedents. Back in the day they used the ole 1/16th rule to identify blacks and that is still used today some degree.

White is a social construct just like black is a social construct. Of course, they're very important social constructs that have had a major impact on our history and our daily lives. But, historically, membership in the "white club" has been a matter of convenience in the United States.
