Post scenarios, and then guess what somebody in that scenario would get charged with in court for it.
My scenario:
Let's say you drove away with a police car. I mean, you didn't steal it, you just drive it without permission. It seems like cops are always leaving their cars running, unattended. I want to know what you would get charged with if you drove it away, parked it legally somewhere random, bolted, and then they later found out it was you. 11/23/2011 3:07:12 AM

Depends on how expensive. But it's definitely stealing, so you'd be charged with grand theft auto. Because it's a police car, they'd probably throw in obstruction of justice and a few other things just to stick it to you. 11/23/2011 7:41:03 AM

I think you should go "borrow" an unattended police car and report back to us after they've arrested you. 11/23/2011 7:43:23 AM

grand theft auto, but not larceny
attempt to elude and evade arrest
resisting arrest
obstruction
impersonating an officer to the public
unlawful possession of firearms (shotty in the trunk)
unlawful use of governmental equipment
probably a few patriotic act crimes, such as "causing terror on the public at large."
careless and reckless driving 11/23/2011 7:49:43 AM

there's nothing illegal about having a shotgun in the trunk 11/23/2011 9:22:05 AM

^It's not illegal to put a firearm in a trunk, but it is illegal to "unlawfully possess" a firearm, and by nature, stealing a firearm is unlawful possession. 11/23/2011 9:23:24 AM

Except the shotgun in the trunk of a police car belongs to... You know.. THE FUCKING POLICE DEPARTMENT and not the "borrower"

I watched a party get busted on Ashe Ave. one time and saw a party-goer try the doors on the police cars as the mass exodus occurred from the backyard of the house to the street. I really wonder what he would have done if one of them had opened. All the officers were still in the backyard telling everyone they had to leave. 11/23/2011 11:02:34 AM

In a nutshell, you'd be slapped with so many charges for this 'one' thing that you'd just go ahead and plead guilty to something to have most of them dropped. 11/23/2011 11:14:09 AM

Back about seven years ago, we were up in New Jersey around the Holidays. We met some friends at a bar, had some drinks, some more drinks, and then we had some more drinks. Come about midnight, we’re ready to leave, and none of us is in any shape to drive, but Dave, the flunkie with a heart of gold and a rap sheet longer than ddd ’s dick, volunteers to pilot our two tone ’93 Tercel the seven or so miles back home.
Jersey winters are typically cold and brutal, and this one was no different. There was a solid layer of ice over the entire road, and any exposed skin was thoroughly raped by the wind. Six drunk guys piled into a shitbox is a recipe for disaster in perfect conditions, so we were really temping fate by letting someone who had just chugged about seven 7 and 7’s take us home. We’re creeping along at a snail’s pace, going probably 17 miles an hour, but we were safe. Dave’s focus on the road was remarkable, especially given the fact that he’d been passed out in a bathroom stall thirty minutes prior. Save for us, the road was devoid of life.
Stop signs are there for a reason, and when there’s traffic, that reason makes sense. But when there’s nobody for miles in either direction, they serve little purpose. And so it was with that notion that we ignored the several along our route, although given our lack of speed and Dave’s new found zen focus, we could have stopped on a dime regardless, should we have had a reason to. It was probably the fourth or fifth sign stop sign we passed when we finally had company on that dark lonely night, of course, in the form of a late model Crown Victoria, with the unmistakable blue and yellow brandings of the New Jersey Police department. He took a minute to put his lights one, almost as if we was teasing us before he fucked us. (And he was definitely going to fuck us.)
Henry saw him first. The rest of us were too busy nursing our concoction’s and butchering Freeway lyrics until Henry’s shrill cry alerted us to his presence. Dave already had more violations than he could count and was remarkably calm about the situation, while the rest of us freaked. He started to pull over and somehow, in his drunken stupor, calmed the rest of our down and told us we had nothing to worry about, since being a drunk passenger is not a crime in and of itself. We eventually realized he was right, and begin to heap praise upon him for being such a good friend and taking the heat yet again for us, all the while as faceless officer sat idle in his car behind us, no doubt prepping the paperwork for what would be an open and shut DUI.*
He finally gets out of his car car and begins sidling up to ours, careful not slip on the thick sheet of ice below his feet. But not careful enough. As we sat there in hushed silence, awaiting Dave’s inevitable fate, we hear something that sounds like throwing a baseball against a brick wall. Then nothing. A few moments pass, a few wtf’s are exchanged, and still nothing. Nothing in the side or rearview mirrors, nothing thru the back window, nothing even when Randall cracks the door and looks back. None of us had any idea what the hell was going on. Finally, after what seemed like ten minutes but was probably only about 45 seconds or so, Dave opens his door and looks back. All we hear is “Holy shit.”
The officer had slipped on the ice and hit his head. He was clearly unconscious, if not dead, and there was a growing pool of blood forming next to his temple. His gun and handcuffs had dislodged in the fall and lay on the ice several feet away. You’d like to think we checked his pulse and got him medical attention, but that was the furthest thing from our minds. Immediately getting as far away as possible was our only focus.
But of course, the Tercel wouldn’t start. This was a recurring problem, and the arctic conditions weren’t helping. None of us knew dick about cars, and even if we had, we didn’t have the faculties to put those skills to use. We were stranded in the middle of a Jersey night with Miguel Cabrera blood alcohol level’s and quite possibly a dead cop on our hands. Not a good start to our Holiday season.
Surely you can see where this leading. Yes, we took his car. Yes, we left him there to die. Yes, we’re going to hell. But no one went to jail that night, and as far as we were concerned, that's all that mattered.
*Everything after this is bullshit. Dave got his fourth DUI and Henry got resisting arrest for giving the officer a hard time. The rest of us waited in the blistering cold for Randall’s sister to come pick us up at three in the morning. Horace got frostbite. I pissed myself. No one got laid all break. But its more fun to tell it the other way. 11/23/2011 12:07:03 PM
