Also, is there that big of a difference between edge lit and back lit?

LED TVs ARE LCD TVs that use LEDs for the backlight instead of CCFLs.

And there is a "big" difference between edge lit and back lit and LED backlit and CCFLs, but whether or not this difference is worth the $$$ is a personal matter.

If you are the kind of person to notice an uneven backlight, or the color shifts from viewing angle, LED backlights are the best way the minimize these things.

There's also full LED TVs too... But I bet you don't have room for one of them.
If you find an OLED TV, that would just be awesome.

I have a 52'' Samsung LCD and 42'' Samsung LED in my apt. I can only tell a slight difference.

^^ I don't think OLED's have ventured past phone sized screens yet.

Samsung had some prototypes preaching 2012 launch date if I remember the CES 2011 coverage correctly.
