Naw, just wait until after he develops diabetes

Seriously though, an 8-year old that weighs well more than I do wtf. Was this a case of mom couldn't afford more than the McDonald's $1 menu, or a case of sheer culinary laziness on the part of the parent.

I'm curious as to what steps were taken prior to taking away the child

I do not know how I feel about taking the child away, but I do think parents should be focused on their child's health including their weight if they are obese.

I definitely think there should be interventions, some of these kids don't stand a chance being raised they way the parents live, and it is sad.

He shouldn't be taken away.

The parents should be trained, the boy should be trained.

Everything else is freedom.

We are approaching "hitlers perfect society" where nobody is allowed to be unhealthy.

As we move closer and closer into a socialized healthcare system (which I disagree with) no one should be allowed to be unhealthy.

The help should be there when you need it, the help shouldn't force itself on you.

It's a fact that you can't help someone that doesn't want to be helped.

AA meetings and intervention NEVER work for this reason

It's an 8 year old kid...they don't know any better. The kid has no clue what hypertension, diabetes, or any of the other life threatening conditions he will be left with. All he knows is that he can eat whatever he wants to eat.

then he will grow up to be like the majority of americans today, zombie bait.

but really I just think that you should have to be tested before you can take your kid home, do you know how spotless you have to be to adopt? I think that there should be a minimum criteria.... like these parents, would have been weeded out

I don't see why you say doom. In your context, everyone is doomed from the moment they are born.

For the preservation of freedom, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, we let them live in a way that makes them happy until they decide they want to change and the help will be there.

So what if the baby names are hitler. Who the fuck cares? It's just a name. Letting them keep the names reminds us of our freedom...

I just thought the name choice was going to get that poor kid's ass whooped, and every time he intoduced himself to adults we would not know why they always had a shocked expression.... but whatev, hope that kid can survive until he is 18 so he can change his name, or enlist in the neonazi armies, whatver floats the fucker's boat

The problem lies not within the name of the children, the problem lies within society. Society shouldn't be joking someone based on their name that they didn't even get to pick.

The kids didn't do anything and society fails to realize this simple little fact.

The kids should be treated with respect regardless of their name.

Judge the person, not the name. Names don't mean anything.

You have a moral responsibility to provide your children with the best opportunity to succeed in every facet of their lives, regardless of whatever idiotic stance you have on how society should behave... So yes, it is wrong of the parents to do something like that...

yes, if you know how society will treat a name, why would you want to cause your child unnecessary pain by naming him that.... just so you can prove it can be done I guess?

I hate kids, I don't want them, but I am still a female and have been wired to care about childrenish, and that part of my brain says it is wrong

I fail to agree with your "morals" and "belief" system. Everyone has different morals and beliefs and you live life using tolerance. You tolerate it until it overlaps your own personal freedom.

A name is just a name and it does not, no matter how hard you try to think, it does not affect anyone but themselves.

Respect their freedom or gtfo

Topic derailment, but I have seen this first hand. My mother-in-law embodies this and my children suffered for it. She NEVER wants to tell them no. Game time limits? Nope. Eat what everybody else is having for supper, even if it isn't your favorite? Nope. Only a little snack/junk food? Nope. She had no self control and couldn't "hurt their feelings" by telling them things like, do your homework, go to bed, eat your dinner, etc.

A big part of moving to the Triangle was to get my wife and kids away from her. She was making my oldest son marginally overweight. He was borderline, and his regular sized pants were getting too tight to fit him. Now he gets snacks if he eats supper, he does not have candy 24/7, he does not play games 24/7 and he is a healthier kid. She still won't say no, so we can't let them stay more than one night, tops. Pretty damn sad, but she wants to be their "favorite".

In your discussion of naming/names, you have unwittingly hit on precisely why we remove children from abusive homes. The kid didn't do anything. He is helpless against his parents' cruel and abusive attacks on his health and well-being. Keep in mind that all the ignorance and I-love-my-kid exclamations do not excuse the irresponsibility that leads to this kind of obesity; and once a parent is properly instructed, it is most definitely cruel and abusive to continue gorging a child.

I'm very open-minded. Somebody wants to have a big kid who's gonna be a linebacker some day, that's their business. But the average height of an 8 year-old is 4'1". And at 200+ pounds, if the parent is not willing and able to make some changes, then he or she should not be in charge of the child. All the appropriate interventions should be made vigorously and enthusiastically, but eventually, you got to get the kid out long enogh to get some weight off and send his parents through even more intensive interventions.

If anything, I think the social workers may have overlooked the notion that this mother is mentally ill and could use some counseling/medication, not just some information on how to provide proper nutrition.
