Easy.

Dumbledore had the Elder Wand (rightfully). He told Snape to kill him so no one could defeat him and claim the wand. But then, Toehead Malfoy disarmed D-dore and became the rightful owner. Then Snape killed D-dore.

Voldemort tried to kill Harry with his own wand, but Harry's wand fought back and broke TR's,

Harry's wand breaks.

Harry destroys some horcruxes.

Harry gets caught and is taken to Malfoy's. When he escapes, he disarms Malfoy, becoming the rightful owner of TEW.

TR goes looking for the Elder Wand and takes it from D-dore's body.

Harry destroys some Horcruxes.

TR kills Snape, thinking Snape was rightful owner of TEW.

TR tries to kill Harry with TEW, but only kills the Horcrux inside of him. TR thinks Harry is dead. (TEW wouldn't have killed its rightful ownew anyway.)

Harry tells Neville to kill the snake. Neville does.

TR tries to kill Harry with TEW again. TEW is pissed, so lets Harry kill TR with Malfoy's wand.

Harry's wand is still broken. HARRY USES TEW TO FIX HIS OWN WAND, AND THEN BREAKS TEW. (Eff the movie!!)

Harry gets old.

Eh, ASOIAF has its own problems (interminably long, everybody gets killed all the time, etc.). They're not really comparable.
