that they chew with their mouth open and it's obnoxious?

my coworker is horrible about it but i feel rude treating her like my niece where i tell her that i can hear her chewing and it's grossing me out.....

i'm supposed to go to lunch with her again this weekend and i'm afraid i might throw up

there is no polite way to do that. you should consider trying to grow as a person and put up with small annoyances with more grace and mutual respect.

^^^ I have that problem in my office, most people bring their lunch and eat at their desk... This guy near me always brings in some kind of smelly soup. He slurps each time he takes a spoonful, I have to leave the room.

Also, a different guy, a visiting scientist from Columbia wears sooooo much cologne. I do not want to make him uncomfortable since this was his first experience in America, and it is his work place too. I am hoping someone else will cave first and tell him. After he leaves, you can smell it for another 20 minutes or so, it is really that bad.

good for you, some of us enjoy when people acknowledge the existence of manners in public, I could care less about elbows on table .... but when it comes to sharing space with people, especially if you have to eat near them, it is rude to not consider other people, it goes both ways

just ask them if they would mind eating like a normal person with a closed mouth

17 cultural reasons why this European never wants to live in America

Quote :
"1. Americans are way too sensitive

Sometimes I wonder if political correctness is in your constitution. I found out very quickly in my first visit that I had to bite my tongue pretty much all the time, and (more annoyingly) that nobody was ever straight with me.

It seems that speaking your mind to individuals is a major taboo. You can’t tell a friend straight when he has fucked up, nobody will ever tell you that you look fat (oversensitivity with not telling obese people to get their act together is a major contributor in my opinion to why there are so many of them in the states), and there’s way too much euphemism to avoid the hard truth.

To a certain extent, I can understand it – America generally does a great job of preventing people from singling out ethnic groups and toning down hate speech. But it waters it down far too much at the individual level.

A lot of Americans I met feel very lonely, and I feel this is a major reason. You may never find a boy/girlfriend if a friend who knows you well and supposedly cares about you, doesn’t tell you the hard facts of what makes you so damn annoying… so that you can change it! Being insulting for the sake of it is needless aggression. But constructive criticism is what friends are for.

The one time in my entire last three months that someone was straight with me was when my friend Karol Gajda gave me some tips to improve my presentation in future after I gave a TEDx talk, while everyone else was doing nothing but massaging my ego. It was really useful advice but it caught me off guard because I was used to months of…"

sure, you can bring up somebody's flaws in the guise of helping them avoid further embarassment, but it will probably never provoke that person to think "gee, that was nice."

the real question is how rudely you want to go about it. in order of ascending rudeness:

you can blame the problem it on yourself as being inproportionately annoyed at small noises (and maybe you are, ha); pull them aside at a quiet moment and tell them what a good friend they are and that's why you are sharing this information; take the passive-aggressive route suggest that someone else eats with their mouth open, which annoys you; or take a poll at a group table to see if other people are also bothered by the behavior while that person is present, or indeed that person's behavior.

its really not big of a deal

you either walk up to them or you speak across the office

you say "yo man chill with the slurping"

i dont know, when its all adults that seems to work, you dont need to be big and bad about it, come up with schemes, talk crap behind his back, or really be rude. just tell him to chill when he does it and its bothering you. No reason for you to not be comfortable in the office, we all work hard.

^ usually I have no problem being straight forward, but I am the new one in the office, and I didn't want to step on toes. The guy who slurps is really really nice and very quiet. Everybody is friends with him. When I talk to him I think 'who cares how he eats?' and then lunch happens... oh god

so I just leave and do work elsewhere for an hour

Your options are simple, yet widely varied.

There's the subtle approach; continually pointing at your own closed mouth as you chew.
There's the direct approach; simply tell them to close their mouth. This can be done in a stern or joking fashion.
There's the confrontational approach; smack their jaws shut each time they chew with their mouth open.
There's the Pavlovian approach; smack them with a rubber band each time they chew with their mouth open.
There's the awkwardly aggressively sexual approach; shove something phallic in their mouth when they're chewing.
There's the passive aggressive approach; get them a t-shirt of the Sesame Street Martians (wa wa wa wawawawawa) and see if they pick up the hint.

I'm sure there are plenty of other options.

Start a conversation, take a bite and pause, chew, swallow, and then say "sorry I don't like to talk with my mouth full" and continue. Hopefully they'll get the hint

I've gotten through 4 of his reasons and so far I've learned he's a critical, frowny-faced negative nancy who doesn't tip.

I think I can safely say I hope he doesn't change his mind about not wanting to live in America.

Maybe that's why America is a melting pot of cultures where other countries would just segregate and riot in the streets when things eventually boil over.

I've lived in a culture where they took it to the opposite extreme.

Did you see Maria the other day?

So apparently that guys doesn't understand that sales tax is both federal and state in the US, hence why it can't easily be included in the sticker price. And has no idea how to simply ignore marketing schemes.

I, too, sit near a coworker who chews with his mouth open ALL THE DAMN TIME. I just throw on some headphones and crank the music until he's done.

Someone told me this is a cultural thing. Supposedly in Asian countries (including India) chewing with your mouth open is a way to show you're enjoying your food. I have no idea if this is true or not.

the reason that he is annoying is because:

a. he acts like he is the authority on everything, and is condescending about it
b. he hates america for basically the same reason why he likes america
c. you could write a piece like this about any country you visit, quoting stupid people (every country has them) does not prove a point.
d. half of his shit makes me
e. in the south, people smile, and I am not that worried about it, nicer than in NYC where you get the middle finger

but I agree, PC has taken shit too far, people can't express themselves anymore
