I figured with all of the comments about UMD recently (especially after our thrashing of them in our last game of the "regular season"), I would open up a thread dedicated to them.
The latest news is that six...that's right...SIX...players on the UMD team have requested (and have been granted) releases to play somewhere else.
Additionally, UMD released the contracts of Edsall's assistants today, which could prompt some discussion elsewhere (besides this board, if any) about his assistants staying. UMD says Edsall will stay for next season...but his staff?
I don't know enough about Edsall to say whether he is a good or bad coach. UMD was 9-4 last season when they let Fat-Ass go, and Edsall went 2-10, losing the last eight games (they beat Miami and Towson). 12/6/2011 11:41:18 PM |

I live in Maryland now, which has absolutely made me hate them more than UNC (along with my ex-gf being a Maryland alum haha). NOTHING has been more fun for me this year than their utter collapse from last season.
That last game was a joy to watch.
Nothing more to add. I just wanted to be giddy in this thread. 12/7/2011 1:57:50 AM |

From what I understand and based on his comments in some articles is that it is just culture shock. Edsall is not letting these kids run loose like Fridge did, and is holding them accountable to team rules, etc. Would not be surprised if the 6 transferring were more of a problem than anything else. 12/7/2011 8:58:16 AM |

how many players has TOB kicked off or let go over the years? I would guess 1 to 2 dozen at least. Get rid of the guys who aren't in it for the team IMO 12/7/2011 9:16:45 AM |

Edsall is an ok at best recruiter and a great coach. He runs a very disciplined program and knowing what I know of him I'm betting these players are probably lazy shits who couldn't take not being pampered to. 12/7/2011 10:01:37 AM |

^ yeah, it's hard to draw any conclusions right now.
TOB kicked off or released a ton of kids to transfer elsewhere in his first couple of years.
But, now in year 5, we know that TOB was successful in changing the culture of the team and turning the program around from where it was when he took over... albeit a lot more slowly than we expected, and still not where we want it to be. But certainly night and day from that 3-9 team in '06. 12/7/2011 11:16:30 AM |

right, kind of hard to explain how you go from 9-4 to 2-10

I still think those uniforms had great potential. If they'd just left off the yellow/black part of the flag and mirrored the red/white side it'd look kinda Knights Templarish. Could've been good, could've been crap, but it still would have been better than those unis.12/7/2011 1:36:48 PM |

The last article is probably the best at highlighting the "two teams" at UMD. One team is on board with Edsall's philosophy of unity and the other team "expressed some displeasure with Edsall’s strict approach, saying that the coach has stifled individuality and created a militaristic atmosphere around the Gossett Team House. The player, who spoke anonymously so he could talk freely, said he would keep his spirits up because he had just three more months before he left the program."
And those are the guys who you want to release.
PK Nick Ferrera said this:
Quote : | "They won’t be a part of what good is going to happen here. Simple as that. They don’t want to be here, then see you later. Honestly, I don’t feel any sadness toward that.
I don’t care if they are a starter or the worst person on the team. I am agreeing with Edsall. I want the best people here who want to play and want to be here. We don’t need cancers on the team." |

Think about what kickers do in practice. Outside of some special teams shit with kick-offs, they normally are off somewhere else kicking field goals. They are not there listening to the coaches bitch out the players and work them like dogs. Maybe they do some weight room work, but in general they are not putting up with the same shit that an offensive or defensive player does. 12/7/2011 5:09:43 PM |

Just because he's a kicker doesn't mean he's wrong. Edsall is not some monster abusing kids and hitting them. He runs a disciplined program and if these assholes don't like it then they should go somewhere that they can play xbox, skip class and chase pussy all day long instead of trying to win football games.

I wonder if there's any thought of firing Edsall this year, or doing a coordinator purge?
There's an article in the Denver Post this morning about how Maryland's OC has contacted Colorado State and asked if he can apply for their open HC position.
Quote : | "But head coach Les Miles prefers a stingy defense and a ball-control offense. As the defense improved, he had Crowton dial back the offense. Amid the uncertainty of Michigan's courtship of Miles a year ago, Crowton left to become offensive coordinator at Maryland, where Randy Edsall had just been hired to succeed Ralph Friedgen. The new staff had a rough first year, going 2-10.
"I'd bring a fun, exciting offense to (Fort Collins)," Crowton said." |

No hat rule indoors? Did he think that was going to sit well? Edsall knows he's got 4 more years with 2m per year coming to him in the bank. He can pretty much implement anything he wants in his mind. Or they can get rid of him and he laughs to the bank. And as hard as everyone in this topic is, you have got to rest guys 2-4 days in the bye week physcially and mentally. I'd be irate if TOB did this, does more harm than good. Guys need 72 hours to forget about football weather you're 7-0 or 0-7.
It's not fair, but a guy like Edsall can't come in and say no hats indoors. Saban, yes, Miles (not that he would), yes, Urban Meyor, yes. Edsall, not really. At least not right away. Even TOB knew he had to play the hand he was dealt and slowly but surely do it his way. Didn't D Morgan stay TOB's first two years and then leave. Bowens too? Makes me think TOB implemented his criteria little by little to hedge the mass exodus. I bet it hits 15 by August in MD and it couldn't happen to a better bunch of fans. And when the MD guys next year play in front of 25K fans there will be more to bolt.

Clout is not a factor. He's the coach, these are his rules. If they don't like it they can transfer or try their hands at university life without athlete status.

Quote : | "Maryland LB Alex Twine faces charge
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Police say a Maryland linebacker has been charged with disorderly conduct after an officer spotted him ranting and punching cars.
University of Maryland police spokesman Capt. Marc Limansky says an officer came across 18-year-old Alex Twine early Friday behaving erratically, yelling and punching cars at a shopping center just off campus.
The officer told Twine to stop, but he fled. Limansky says the officer chased Twine and arrested him. He says there were no reports of damage to cars.
Twine, a freshman linebacker from Gaithersburg, was charged with disorderly conduct and failure to obey a reasonable and lawful order and released. A trial is set for Jan. 30.
The team spokesman says the matter will be handled internally in accordance with the student-athlete code of conduct." |
