One of my favorite bands...whom I really really miss.

I don't really understand how there's that much money in it. So I went to Wikipedia...

Quote :
"A typical moonshine still may produce 1000 gallons per week and net $6000 per week for its owner. The simplicity of the process, and the easy availability of key ingredients such as corn and sugar, make enforcement a difficult task. However, the huge price advantage that moonshine once held over its "legitimate" competition legally sold has been reduced. Nevertheless, over half the retail price of a bottle of distilled spirits typically consists of taxes."

Lol I had this exact same conversation last night. ATF agent is watching Discovery Channel, records the episode, uses the taping as evidence in the trial. I just can't see how this show isn't staged.

I do agree with NRR. Their projects are often cool ideas, would be fun to shoot, etc., but in reality the vast majority of them are hack jobs/afro engineered/etc. Very rarely do they actually do some real gunsmithing and original work to create a new firearm.

It's either slap a new barrel on some other manufacturer's gun and then say "It's a custom Red Jacket!" or they tape 4 M16s together and add an electronic trigger control and call it the "ultimate fighter's gun".

in short, pretty much everything they do is pointless. for every project they take on, there's already a weapon in existence that fills that niche better than whatever junk they put together.

But at what price? Because I'd bet their hack job solutions cost about 1/1000th what a defense contractor would charge.

yeah and it's probably 1/1000th the job a defense contractor would do. just imagine trying to get liability insurance to cover the use of some of their ridiculous firearms

^ If the choice is afford a hackjob that works, or don't get anything, I can see why they do decent business. Just watching some episodes of the show, it seems like they're just making weapons actually accessible to public services entities that otherwise couldn't afford them.

Complex and expensive doesn't always mean better or more reliable. There's a laundry list of military grade weapons and equipment that are/were absolute garbage in the field.

exactly. who is going to pay money for a silenced shotgun? or a guitar/semiauto rifle?? or whatever you call that chrome piece of shit motorcycle gun? it was all for the show, and they played it right and now their shop is nationally recognized

what i'm getting at is a defense contractor wouldn't even touch most of the ideas they pursue on the show

it's mindless entertainment for the masses, but those who are a little deeper in the firearm community know it's a bunch of hair-brained ridiculousness.

they built what they called an "AK-47 sniper rifle" and shot a group with it at 100 yds iirc. the accuracy wasn't any better than most hunting rifles in comparable calibers, but they sat there patting themselves on the backs. there's a reason such a weapon didn't already exist.

same for the twin water-cooled full auto AR-15s they mounted on a boat. there are much better full auto MGs that don't require a fickle water pump.

all the stuff for the show is outrageous and for the show only, but what about the everyday stuff that they make. Is that laughable within the industry?

that's old...you can buy the documentary. PBS shows it sometimes too.

is a good book that goes in depth about shining in the late 1800s, early 1900's. One of the main reasons that moonshining was so widespread (other than prohibition), what that you could make significantly more money from a bushel of corn in shine form than in bushel form....And is was much easier to transport down the mountain than a bunch corn bushels.

^It's possible this show has already been filmed (this season) and those guys are already facing charges. People will actually do stuff like this knowing full well they'll get caught. If that's the case (which I'm sure it is) there was definitely monetary incentive from Discovery.
