Any funeral home that would allow this is ripe to get sued. Unless someone performs it - then it's ok. Copyright law is retarded, for the record.

Yes, but who is going to be that dick that reports a copyright violation during a funeral? Also, if the funeral home doesn't want to take on the liability, they can allow the family to bring in something to play the music. This was done at my uncle's wake--the family brought in a stereo to play several songs that had meaning to him.

For the record, my choice might be "Don't Carry it All" by the Decemberists. Kind of a message to those left behind.

The funeral home down the street or across town is usually the one to turn them in. We've had customers get hit with it; it's not pretty. With legal fees and everything it's usually a $20K+ venture.

My dad passed away in December of 2010.

At his ceremony, we played:

James Blunt - Goodbye My Lover
Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
Ben Folds - The Luckiest

I am over Stairway to Heaven, but Goodbye My Lover is a very powerful and moving song in this situation. The Luckiest was my dad's song to my mom that he used to sing to her. Also very powerful.

My old man had that song played on the organ during the recessional at his funeral. It was pretty badass and Im not certain that everyone realized what it was.

"Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness" by Smashing Pumpkins

I think that'd be good for the montage of old photos.

I went to a funeral once where they played Mariah Carey. Wasn't expecting that walking into the church.

It's pretty incredible how a post on TWW years ago becomes a funeral request.
