You're not supposed to be able to catch a particular strain of cold more than once. Once you've had it you're not going to "get it back" after passing it to someone else. You may get a completely different cold, but not the same one.

Unless of course this "weak t-cell mediated response" prevents both her and her son from developing such types of immunity.
