I really hate small talk, I need to learn to do it though. My manager said so at our last review.

gotta hate it when people feel they have to tell you how their kids are doing when you ask "whats the weather?"

I really hate the bs social events our department has. My interpretation is that they are optional. But I am told I should do it for good "citizenship", yet all that happens is that I sit in a corner talking to 4 people that I know eating cake. I have talked to people I don't know, but then we quickly run out of stuff to chit chat about and then I wonder "why should I go to these things?". Some people in the department love this stuff, they help plan and go to all of them ... good on them, but whhhhhy do I have to go?

I go to ones that I feel are actually important for my academic career, and I will gladly slap on a smile and talk about research .... butt I dooooon't care what everyone is doing for their vacation and what their kids made them when we never talk any other time in the year... blah blah blah

I have become much more extroverted the last 2 years due to one of my jobs, and having to take a more public role.

Truths about Introverts

- Require the rest of the world to interact with them on their terms.
- Completely inflexible on social behavior

one thing that really hit home for me is the thing about loud noises or too much commotion. whenever i'm at a bar and the music is too loud to hear others cleary, i totally shut down and go into my own little world...i'd rather just not talk than struggle to have a conversation.

^ Why would introversion be clinically diagnosed? It's not a disability.

I also don't like music that loud at bars and clubs.

I mean for concerts I love the music that loud, something where I'm there for the music. But if I'm somewhere that the objective is ostensibly social interaction, and the environment makes that next to impossible, I basically go into "observer mode."

Sometimes I'll nudge someone and point. But that's about it.

I agree with most of that, but I think people let introversion become an excuse.

"Ehh, I don't want to go out...that's just not my personality."

"I don't talk to random people and get to know them...that's just not my personality."

If you identify as an "introvert", it's pretty easy to let that prevent you from going out of your comfort zone. Going outside of your comfort zone is key to personal growth, though.

If you can recognize that you have a natural inclination to keep to yourself (as I have), there are rewards for deliberately working against that tendency.

One of my worst tendencies is to over analyze tiny details, like if I'm giving a presentation or a speech and slip on a word, I think its a huge deal and everyone thinks less of me, when in reality hardly anyone probably even noticed. Also with girls.

it took me a long time. It comes from having a moment of clarity and suddenly it clicks, granted you still have the anxieties, but you learn to push them aside so that you can have a life.

sometimes going to a counselor helps

simonn, looks like you are a sonofabitch who is, what, embarrassed by your extroversion, and can't be in the cool introverts club?

tell you what, why don't you take all of your extra versions and go with your extra virginness and go SOMEWHERE else, like, where people want to hear about you.

say...ANOTHER THREAD.

how's that for introversion?!

I'm pretty good at small talk, but because I feel that politics, religion, and the weather should never be discussed with acquaintances I get way too personal after the first few exchanges unless they want to talk about sports.
