Good thing Cherie Berry won't let this happen on her watch

Seriously....we need a diagram of how this happened...I'm not quite understanding from the write-up...

FYI - No disrespect to Suzanne

think about it, the doors pinch her and the elevator moves upwards. she was probably in there sideways, so that would mean (for example) the left side of her body was "stopped" by the floor above while the right side of her body continued in the elevator.

If she had her upper torso in the elevator...it would have just crushed her leg when it hit the floor...if she had her upper toros outside the elevator and did a whole got caught upside-down in a rope trap thing wouldn't her leg just fall out of the elevator? since when do elevator doors clamp down like a mother?

elevators... should have a sensor to sense when there is too much resistance on the outside of the cart... meh! jadlskfjklasjlkj

they're not gonna write in the article "was torn in half", besides i dont think that's what happened, i think her leg got caught and she was dragged up through the doors... at least partially

You'd love the elevators at my doctor's office then. A paraplegic could walk up the stairs faster than riding the elevator.

People really don't understand what happened?

Her foot got caught in the doors of the elevator car (not the outer doors that you can pry open), and the outer doors were still open slightly. So when the elevator took off it would have just ripped her through the outer doors (probably flayed her against the top of the floor) and then crushed her to death as it rose up the shaft.

Pretty fucking horrifying.

oh god it's even worse. . . the opposite

Quote :
"A Fire Department official described the accident as follows:

Her foot or her leg are heading into the elevator while the door is open. Her one foot is in the car; but then, the doors close on her leg and the elevator shoots upward. And she is just kind of yanked up with it. Then, the elevator car becomes pinned between the first and second floor. It seems like her body is what stops the elevator’s movement."

^^^^ Was the majority of her body in the elevator or in the lobby?

This is what I didn't think was clear when reading it.

^It's extremely clear, only her foot was caught.

So the elevator SHUCKED her whole from leg to head through the outer doors and dragged it upwards (grinding along the inner shaft).

it sounds to me like she was walking through the lobby and tried to hustle onto the elevator as the doors were closing and stuck her foot in. usually this causes the doors to bump and reopen.

usually

i think then the elevator doors (the inner doors of the car) chomped on her leg and started ascending, dragging her through the outer doors (the ones you see while waiting for the elevator to arrive) and up between the outside of the elevator and the inner wall of the elevator shaft. the mechanics were such that her body jammed up the works enough that the elevator stopped.

"only her foot was caught" could mean she was stepping on and her front foot was caught or she was all the way on and her back foot was caught.

Could you imagine if one of the people in the elevator was hitting the door close button hoping she wouldn't get to the door in time? Bet that person feels great right about now.

It's ok - they'll feel better in a bit, as the two occupants of the elevator were shipped off to the hospital for potential psychological trauma:

Quote :
"Two other people who got on just before looked on in horror as Suzanne Hart was killed. They were rescued from the elevator, which jammed between the first and second floors, and were taken to a hospital to be evaluated for psychological trauma."

Yeah, no amount of evaluation/therapy would make me want to get on an elevator ever again after witnessing that - stairs are pretty harmless in comparison.

i can certainly understand the people witnessing the event being traumatized, but anyone saying they're scared to get on an elevator after reading this needs a reality check. in comparison, driving is way more dangerous, as is pretty much anything else. this is a freak accident.

Steep-ass stairs, long-ass spiral walkway, sketchy-ass elevators. Yep, the architect and elevator people did not want anyone to actually get into this building.

haha, I was gonna post about how this is going to cause some people to develop an irrational fear of elevators.

and subsequent posts after the OP proved that already.
