One thing I think many of us agree on from the "Metal/Hardcore" thread is that a true metal head should not get overly focused on all of the extremely nuanced sub genres of metal. As Blasphemor stated, its all metal. Many bands have crossed genres at some point, or display elements from many different sub genres...Children of Bodom comes to mind, or even Sepultura. Hell even Pantera started as a more glam metal band. The point being, overly focusing on metal genres is kinda stupid, if the band has good music.

That being said, I think any real metal head still despises all that once was Nu Metal. Im glad that fucking fad died. But still, it begs the question "what technically was nu metal". Obviously shit like Limp Dick, Staind, Linkin Park, Papa Roach, Korn, Incubus are easily defined as such, but other bands that came out around that time might also fall into the label just because of the time they emerged. Also, around the height of nu metals popularity a lot of decent metal bands experimented with the sound, like Fear Factory and Soulfly, but I wouldnt call those bands nu metal. So my question is kind of rhetorical to start a discussion about what was nu metal, and what defines a band as such

Fuck I didn't know so many of the bands that I like are nu-metal.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_nu_metal_bands

I like a lot of different music and really enjoy some serious metal (CoB, In Flames, BTBAM, FF, Dragonforce, etc.) but I like at least one song from 40 of those bands. Pwnt.

Might get responses in this thread:

message_topic.aspx?topic=535736

I'll pop in that tread from time to time but I just don't like 90% of the stuff linked there. I wouldn't consider myself a "metal snob," maybe I am.

Not too sure about nu metal but here's a few directions metal took that I'm not the largest fan of:

* Gritty vocals juxtaposed with vocals that would find a better home in a Nsync song.
* Guitars as nothing more than sound effect devices, songs that don't even have riffs, and to a lesser extent songs that have no guitar solos. I attribute all this to a lot of bands simply not having the talent.
* Metal is supposed to be manly, so lyrics anguishing over how much of a nancy boy you are don't do it for me.
* Minor quibble, but that whole era where people tried to one up each other in "heaviness" simply by dropping the tuning on their guitars *gasp* another half step *gasp* than all the other bands did. This song is dropped down to E flat. BFD. No, E flat A WHOLE OCTAVE DOWN. It is therefore heavier   \m/ >.< \m/
* Also, not a fan of screamo. Often the #1 factor behind dismissing a band on first impressions are the vocals.

To this day, I am still a big fan of Incubus, Rage Against The Machine, and System Of A Down.

haters gonna hate

I don't think Incubus is really nu metal, they have changed their sound so much from when they started as a psychedelic-type rock group. I did love science, make yourself, and morning view though, which are probably the 3 albums you could consider them as nu metal. And I never really thought of rage against the machine as nu metal

Half of the bands on that list are not even a little bit alike.

I will also admit to Disturbed as a guilty pleasure, however I dont really see them as nu metal. That was my point, that some bands that emerged around that time are called nu metal even though they really dont fit the "rap rock turntable" definition of nu metal. I will also add Godsmack to that list of my guilty pleasures, I saw them when they played the Ritz back in high school. Id say Godsmack is more alternative metal than nu metal. Getting overly sensitive on genres is dumb, but a nu metal label to a band is death in the eyes of a metal head, myself included.

I personally hated Incubus, RATM, System of a Down, POD, for the record.

[Edited on December 16, 2011 at 7:06 PM. Reason : i mean, plenty of those bands suck, but thats true of all metal genres.]

[Edited on December 16, 2011 at 7:07 PM. Reason : i also agree that half those bands are nothing alike. hello otep, meet limp bizkit.]

Is it just me or is an involved discussion of the actual label to give a certain class of possibly similar styles of music across a handful/many bands just...fucking stupid?

Maybe it's the engineer in me but trying to decide if band X fits label A where band Y may or may not fit said label...and hell, trying before all that to just decide what label A is to even have the discussion...seems like a gigantic waste of time.

It's like digging a hole for the fuck of it and then refilling said hole and digging it again. I can't fathom what at all is interesting about this endeavor.

^^ id imagine, that like everything else in entertainment that involves genres, it is so that you can easily relate with others.

hey you like X? me too. figuring out what X is and what goes with that is a pretty key aspect of that.

for instance, if you and i are hanging out (you lucky dog), you don't want me saying "oh you like metal? cool, you should check out nickelback." think of how sad and/or angry you'd be had you not heard of them before?

in this case, if i like soulfly (i do) and you told me to check out papa roach, our experience of sharing would really be suffering. likewise if you love godsmack and i told you to check out dir en grey...well, i mean shit.

How is Korn only mentioned once in this thread.

"Korn pioneered the nu metal sound with the release of their demo album in 1993." -wikipedia

^^Funny you mention that, because Nickelback wasn't on that list. So I went to their Wiki entry and this is what it has listed:

Quote :
"Genres Alternative rock, post-grunge, hard rock, alternative metal, heavy metal"

Wiki thinks you would be completely wrong to list Nickelback as nu metal.

[Edited on December 18, 2011 at 4:32 PM. Reason : though i said "metal" and your listing clearly states heavy metal]
