Needs to be a giant wolf statue in the middle there.

This campus needs more giant wolf statues.

I drove by it a couple times on the way to the golf course. Never realized it was a house. I thought it was just a bunch of offices.

This is so lame to me. Just because most of our buildings on campus look like shit, doesnt mean we should continue that tradition.

I'd still live there though.

Looks like a church more than a residence. Inside is nice, but the outside is awful.

Honestly whoever chose this design should be fired.

So, main story is "for public use" and the second floor is the residence. I want to see pictures of the residence side of things.

^I like that more.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_architecture Is the closest you can get to a proper name for the original.

As for this new post-modernist pseudo-historical monstrosity...

Well, I'll just leave that alone.

I can't believe we spent 3.5 million to build that ugly shitbox. Even one of the most expensive private custom homebuilders could have built that for $1-1.5 mil.

The original architect of the Chancellor's Residence was DixonWeinstein (now WeinsteinFriedlein) out of Chapel Hill. Early in the design process, some preliminary drawings were shown to the chancellor (Oblinger), an ex-chancellor or two, and some trustees. No one liked the design. They all thought it was too modern. From what I understand Oblinger said " I don't care what it looks like as long as it is Georgian." This is when the Dean of the School of Design became involved. Soon he became the "design" architect and DixonWeinstein became more of an architect of record.

The landscape architecture firm I worked for (Reynolds & Jewell) was a part the original design team. I was able to see the project transform from conservatively modern house to an italian villa to what ever the fuck this monstrosity is. Every step along the way reducing the scope of the design and the budget to the point were the entire design team was fired (architects, landscape architects, civils, etc.) before the construction drawings were complete to save money. The house became a design build of sorts for John Rufty Homes (contractors not designers) and the site design was completed by the campus landscape architect and a landscape architecture student. As someone fairly in the know on this project, it's pretty embarrassing if you ask me.

From what I know, this was built entirely with private funds (which is why the project became known as the point, it needed to need to be a private development to be built with private funds). I think those providing said funds didn't give much leeway with the design. I think the dean did the most with what he had. Still pretty sad though. Like I said, the design team was fired as a cost saving measure. Someone, somewhere though that is was a good idea to begin cost cutting and value engineering instead of trying to work towards a well thought out design that could be implemented in phases. To me, it's a joke to me.

** Not bitter because the firm I worked for was fired.

OH well I want this brick color that looks like the ugly stuff they used in old factories BUUUUUUUUT I want all the housing details to be super modern with right angles and that cool gunmetal color on all the accents BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT I want it to look like a Presbyterian Church as well (complete with a parking lot big enough for 20 vehicles).

DO IT.

[Edited on December 20, 2011 at 10:33 PM. Reason : Perhaps I meant to say methodist church. What I'm getting at is that it's an ugly shitbox.]

From my point of view (as someone who goes in the house frequently)

It is pretty fantastic on the inside, although not at all practical. Personally I think the aesthetics got too much of a focus over practicality (and the aesthetics could use an upgrade which tells you where practicality lies on the totem pole) Sharp geometric angles are emphasized prominently throughout the house but when you start making the driveway geometric and impossible for people to maneuver... seriously?

There is a lot of criticism about the house, but the bottom line is there were so many opinions and hands being thrown into the pot that I imagine it was an impossible task to please everyone.

^ Also it could have used that extra design team not only on the outside, but the decorator went a little crazy haha

the fact that the house is made of brick is not what makes it ugly. just for the record; it looks like some people can't separate the two.
