yeap I'm here. Came in an hour early today too. And I'll be back Monday at 9AM excited for another work week...

Boss played the line "that week between christmas and new years is the most underutilized week of the year - we're all gonna be here so we don't miss it" No one is getting vacation...

Plus we have a lady out having a baby (probably today) and one called in sick the last 2 days. And we're all salaried so no overtime anywhere to be found for coming in early, staying late, or working a saturday/sunday shift to cover.

I'm hoping to get hooked up with a raise in the next week or so. That will make it a little worth it.

Though I'm not new, I've been in this position for over 2 years. But still the second most junior person in our group and the most junior in the desktop support unit. I have more leave than I know what to do with (been with the university for 10 years), just can't use it today.

Today's actually a day off for the company, but I came in of my own accord. I'll be working tomorrow too. I'm hourly, and the company said to work as much as possible. Doesn't hurt that I have a ton to do as well.

Though, since it is an off day, I took my sweet time getting here . Only other people here are the CEO's wife (wrapping presents) and the contracted cleaning lady who comes in every other week

probably could have been closer to 9 or 10, but she is not the greatest at preparing for trips... I had all my stuff packed to head to charlotte the night before I left, and took me 15 minutes to get home from work and be ready to get on the road. took her 2 hours today to get on the road after work

I sort of worked today. Drove from midnight to 1:30 this afternoon. Back in Raleigh with sun poisoning, bug bites, and probably about ten extra pounds from a week of beer on the beach and fried seafood.

Ready for Christmas (Part Two)! But I've gotta lighten up on this food so I can fit into my clothes once vacation ends.

I love how people have a ton of vacation time saved up or or just too pussy to take the time off for fear of looking like a "slacker." I mean, if you have a legitimate reason for being at work during the holidays (like no vacation time, they simply won't let you, you have something planned during the Christmas shut down that was scheduled way in advanced allowing you time to work your private life around work), I can see being at work.

But to be all like "I'm the "new" guy" when you have vacation time left, or you don't want to feel guilt or shame for taking the time off doesn't make you better or smarter than anyone else. It just makes you naive. Nobody is going to give you a reward for sparing your private time for the company. It's not noble. If they didn't want you to have vacation time they wouldn't have given it to you to begin with. Putting stress on yourself and not allowing your batteries to recharge isn't doing anyone any favors. If anything not taking time off and allowing yourself to rest just makes you less efficient.

I'm new at my company too. On January 3rd it will be my 1 year anniversary. They started me with 10 days of vacation. If I didn't use the time, I lost it. They shut down for a few days for Christmas and I took my 6 remaining vacation days off so I could take the rest of the year off starting with this past Wednesday. I don't feel at all bad or ashamed, or lazy. I've been there during July 4th, I have been there late many nights (well beyond 9 PM, and there until almost 2 AM on at least one occassion). Not a damn person could say a thing that would make me feel bad for taking off.

I guess all I'm trying to say is treat yourself. Don't be a hero. You'll just be burnt out and finding yourself thinking about bringing in a submachine gun and shooting up the entire god damned place.

^ True dat. At my last long-term job, they would try to guilt the shit out of people for using their vacation time. Granted some people tried to take it at ridiculous times like during exams when we're teachers, but if classes aren't in session screw it I'm going on vacation.

For the record this is not true. I left the building at 12:37, drove home from Weston Parkway to Oberlin Rd. Then put all hte stuff that was already packed up in the car, packed up the cat, drove from our house to lead mine rd to drop off cat, and was on 40 west bound by 1:35. I think that's pretty damn good....dammit.
