quasi related story, only in the view of some chinese on individual safety being regulated

when i was spending time in Shenzhen, there was this mall, with like 6 stories, and in the middle was an open area where the escalators were. there was a space, about 18" wide, between the escalators and the glass wall that they had as a banister/barrier from walking off into the open area to the ground floor.

one day i went to get some counterfeit clothes, noted the gap and thought it was really unsafe. later that night, read on the news that after i had left, a vendor's four year old child had walked off the 5th floor through the gap, and died on impact, kinda splattering on people walking around the ground floor.

the official response from the police and mall management wasn't to fix the gap, but rather that "the vendors had been warned to keep their children away from the escalators"

I worked in China for two months between undergrad and grad school in furniture. We would go to various factories each day. Usually they would make some minimal effort to straighten up shit. Well we walk into this one factory and there is a layer of saw dust on everything and in the air. Sawdust in high levels is explosive. So we hauled ass out of there. One spark and that place could have been blown off the face of the earth.
