Analysts say gas prices could reach a record high $5 per gallon this summer.

http://www.wavy.com/dpp/news/local_news/portsmouth/record-gas-prices-estimated-for-summer

Doesn't make sense? This should give some incite:

Biggest US export for 2011 is fuel

if anyone, liberals should rage over high/higher gas prices. affects no one more than low/middle class...

and that conflicts with their green views

and that conflicts with their elitist attitude about U.S. prices vs world prices (hey, pretty much ^^ that kind of statement).

I'm going to start talking about the possibility of $5 gas so that when it inevitably happens sometime in the next 20 years I can feel really smug for having known it was coming all along.

It's a really tough dilemma. A part of me welcomes higher gas prices because it will get us to start thinking about how we design our society around the car and considering designing things to be more walkable and transit oriented. The other part of me knows that it's gonna be really painful given that at present so many people are tied to their cars with no other options, and yes, higher gas prices disproportionally affect those with lower incomes.

The liberals want this (as previously mentioned). You want lower gas prices? Then you shouldn't have voted for Obama in '08 and you shouldn't vote for him this fall either.

I'm not sure that's necessarily true. Most politicians across the entire spectrum see it as their duty to combat high gas prices. It's the same reason the gas tax hasn't been raised since 1993. Not even to account for inflation. Doing anything that could raise gas prices is seen as political suicide.

Your comments show a big understanding on your own consumption of gas.

Though your comments show nothing pertaining to the cost of transporting goods which affect prices across the board in virtually every industry.

The fact of the matter is, there is more than enough gas available for gas prices to be stable around $2-$3 for decades. For gas to double in price, while we are selling the gas for profit to other countries, shows that the profits aren't being spent to buy more gas. They are spent to line some rich people's pockets.

Obama did say specifically that he doesn't want to see prices drop below $3 to encourage development of alternate fuel sources.

this does not however mean he wants to see them over $4 because he also has said that he knows that will cripple our economy.

foo1 - out.

The US economy can't support that high of a price. It'll crash if gas gets that high.

qft especially since $5/gallon has been built up as a wall or tipping point.

What I think is funny is that every one is worried about running out if fuel. There is wayy more fuel out there than people think. Controlled supply is the only reason prices are high.

^ it's not built up as, it is the tipping point. It's when the price difference between the evs and their gas equivilent actually offers a reasonable payback.

right now is not a good time to have high gas prices clogging up the already sputtering economy. I'm all for alternate fuels and whatnot, but we have got to get out of this economic rut (and when we do, all you hippies will be better able to afford your nissan leaves.)

And 10 years ago everyone said that $2/gal gasoline was the tipping point. There is plenty of oil out there but demand has gone up and environmentalists keep throwing up red tape and road blocks to prevent further development and expansion of recovering oil.
