1) people who use it for a garbage disposal.
2) people who don't know how to use one at all.
3) annoying flames set to full blast (without increasing heat or anything like that)
4) people who are incapable of making smores normally. its either nothing or a riotous meltdown of marshmallows.

whats on your list?

I have a gas one that isn't vented to the outside, and it smells awful when I turn it on. I've been told that smell will burn off, but I feel like I'd be dead by then, so I never use it. I miss my wood-burning fireplace.

I've got gas logs vented out the back of the fireplace, with a pane of glass permanent in front of the fire.

Barely any heat, and I can't throw my garbage in there to get rid of it.

Turned the gas of to it a coupla years ago.

I have a similar setup. It's primarily decorative. It does have a blower that can be turned on to circulate the heat around the house, but the fellow from the gas company told us that is actually less energy-efficient than just using the central heat.

I would turn the gas off to it myself but I kind of like to have it on for ambience once in a great while.

I've never made smores on a fireplace, and in fact never even considered it.

Gonna have to start doing that.

^^I've heard the same.

Mine works on a lightswitch on the wall adjacent. I'm just not in the fire-by-lightswitch camp, and I've got two kids that would love to incessantly turn it on and off because fire.

So I turned it off, turned off the supply at the gas logs, and turned off the valve under the house.
