yep, and it is lazy, antique finishes are not that hard. Go to a garage sale, find a cabinet, antique it and you can save like $100... shabby chic is pretty dumb.

Bought vintage 40's secretary (the piece of furniture, not the person) at a consignment store. Neglected to refinish it, as the original finish has kind of a neat look to it. Dare I say, a patina.

Am I guilty of shabby chic? I hope not.

shabby chic is what you find in catalogs and hollister magazines

DIY is doing what they sell for 20X the markup, and a fraction of the cost.

Do you actually think the furniture makers and Hollister invented shabby chic and all the people who are re-purposing used furniture are copying them? I think you've got that backwards.

A technique such as antiquing may be an element of shabby chic, but it doesn't define the style by itself. As with any style of design there are going to be multiple elements that need to come together for something to fit the genre.

The second house has 1.5 rooms with no privacy and a bunch of moveable walls. I don't even know what you would call that? Maybe some kind of extreme Danish modern? Neither pic fits the bill IMEO (in my expert opinion) and I've skimmed through nearly one full magazine on the subject.

I don't think modernist design and having character are mutually exclusive. That second example that sumfoo1 posted is pretty damn cold though.

I wouldn't say so. It's a rather dark brown. Does have some scrollwork on the lid and curved legs, but I wouldn't say it looks girly. (and if it does, my fiancee and I picked it out together, so it's her fault )

The first pic, the one you like, is an example of modern design IMO.
The sink/cabinet and chairs certainly fit the bill. The table looks like something from restoration hardware and the exposed brick would fit right in. There is nothing shabby about that at all.

I do hate shabby chic.

On the other topic being discussed in here, I do not think that modern design is all sterile. It definitely CAN be sterile but I think the best modern designs utilize a combination of new, clean & sleek elements with some warmer elements like some reclaimed wood; shag rugs; and high quality, textured fabrics or upholstery.

Not saying that I love all these, but these are some quick examples of modern spaces that aren't cold at all imo (just grabbed a few pictures from room and board):






To me, these are much more the norm in modern interior design right now as opposed to something super cold and sterile.
