Nothing wrong with dollar stores. I went to a pretty bad ass one in Seattle. You could have outfitted most of your house in that one.

So, what do dollar stores reveal about America? He asks the question in the article's title but all he gives are a bunch of stats that could be determined without comparing anything to dollar stores.

Basically all he proved is that poor people prefer to shop at less expensive stores, which doesn't take an in-depth study to ascertain.

People with less money shop at stores with cheaper goods, leading said stores to be located in lower income areas???

Ever wonder where the white people live in Raleigh?

How about Greensboro?

That Harris Teeter on Western is pretty damn ghetto. More apt would be Fresh Market.

My bad, that was a cut-paste error. Here is Greensboro:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=harris+teeter+in+greensboro,+nc&hl=en&sll=35.859558,-78.634198&sspn=0.298281,0.617294&gl=us&hq=harris+teeter&hnear=Greensboro,+Guilford,+North+Carolina&t=h&z=11

Also, I love how you can draw a line from Capital Blvd southward across downtown and downwards along S Saunders...not a single Teeter south or east of that line within Raleigh city limits.

The harris teeter on Western is horrible.

High Prices without any of the cool shit the big ones have. (sushi, fresh subs, etc)

Yeah there's not much to recommend that one, but it probably survives by being the only grocery store in the area. Closest ones I can think of are the Food Dog on Western and that store up Maynard a mile or so. Though in my case it's not just the extras, but in general I tend to like Teeter because the stores are clean, well-stocked, well-organized, and the employees are helpful and pleasant. I'll pay a premium for that.
But when I lived in the area I would drive the extra ~3 miles to the HT at Cameron Village rather than go to the one on Western, lol.

[/white person]

Family Dollar and Dollar General are like the small-town versions of Wal-Mart. Dollar General in particular--hardly any of them in big cities but they're all over the small towns. Not really dollar stores though despite the name.

You can get 40s at the ghettoteeter though..which is something you can not say for the cary miniteeter. Which one I go to depends on whether or not I want a 40 (usually the miniteeter)
