Looking to do background transcoding of footage...

Like maybe I could drop clips into a folder and they'd be automatically queued to transcode....

Anyone work with this before?

I have a bunch of idle CPU power that I could easily task with these in teh background. I see there are some open source solutions...

Was more curious if anyone has had to do this and if so, which solution was the best feature filled one...

I've only ever done it manually with virtualdubs frameserver and some custom scripting. And only between two computers.

The top shit solution is Apple's Compressor. http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/compressor/
