http://espn.go.com/new-york/nba/story/_/id/7617213/new-york-knicks-jeremy-lin-ben-jerry-apologizes-lin-sanity-flavor

Quote :
"Ben & Jerry's, the iconic ice cream brand famous for flavors borrowed from a broad swath of the culinary spectrum, has apologized for including fortune cookies in its "Taste the Lin-Sanity" frozen yogurt sold at a Harvard Square location in Boston

The Vermont-founded company has replaced the fortune cookies in its honey-swirl, Jeremy Lin-inspired variety with waffle cones.

"We offer a heartfelt apology if anyone was offended by our handmade Lin-Sanity flavor," Ben & Jerry's said in a statement.

Lin, the New York Knicks point guard who shot to NBA stardom this month after spurring a win streak in the absence of Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire, played four seasons for the Harvard Crimson before turning pro in 2010.

"We are proud and honored to have Jeremy Lin hail from one of our fine, local universities and we are huge sports fans," Ben & Jerry's said in the news release. "Our intention was to create a flavor to honor Jeremy Lin's accomplishments and his meteoric rise in the NBA, and recognize that he was a local Harvard graduate.

"We try (to) demonstrate our commitment as a Boston-based, valued-led business and if we failed in this instance we offer our sincere apologies.""

Are you fucking kidding me?

The pussyfication of America continues.

How in the fuck is this offensive? The guy is Asian. They made a flavor with something Asian in it.

Chill the fuck out society!

Exactly. Should have told the whiners to go get fucked.

Damn, maybe it would be different if they were making fun of him or his ethnicity, but come on.

Fortune cookies arent even an Asian thing, they were invented in the United States

Next thing you know, some Asian is gonna gonna get offended for a Chinese Buffet serving eggrolls.

^That really has nothing to do with this.

People associate fortune cookies with Chinese food. Thats all that matters.

Nobody cares if America invented them, that is pointless to this story.

You only get them at Asian places.

Thats basically the point.

It doesn't matter who invented them.

Fortune cookies are asian.

But they are Japanese, not Chinese. They were invented in Japan, then a few years later they were adopted by American Chinese restaurants.

Fortune cookies were invented in motherfucking California. By Asian Americans.

Using fortune cookies as a symbol for actual Chinese people should be more offensive.

it was a Japanese cracker that inspired the American spinoff we know as fortune cookies. I am not saying it matters, bc Lin is from CA, and the fortune cookie we know today was first made in CA, so really it makes sense, but the fortune cookies themselves, are not Asian, and I just wanted to correct that.

The most correct adjective for the American fortune cookie would be Asian American. Maybe faux Asian American. Just like General Tso's chicken. The original Japanese cookie it was spun off from had nowhere near the circulation that the knockoff did. They looked very different too.

Ethnic Asians in the US have their own ethnic identity. I'm not saying that the fortune cookie in the ice cream was right, but in terms of symbolism, it's as appropriate as a symbol can be.

I think the real problem is that its perceived as a negative symbol. Honestly, it's hard to have a symbol of an ethnic group in the US at all without it having a negative association. Saying that basketball is a black American thing is a pidgin-holing kind of thing.

For second-generation Asian Americans, the fortune cookie as a symbol is almost archaic. It doesn't apply to them for the most part. Lin himself went to Harvard, so yeah.

I'm not Asian-American. I wasn't made or born in Asia. I AM AMERICAN!
I'm tired of this hyphenated American bullshit. You are either American or you are not. Stop letting people put a label on you.
Are "Asians" offended by what B&J did? Fuck no! People need to tell busy body, squeaky wheel types to fuck off.
The Chink in the armor headline didn't bother me either.

Some other shit that bothers me...

If you weren't born in Africa then you aren't African American. Africa is a big continent, what color is everyone on it? Not everyone is black. If a white guy born in South Africa becomes a US citizen guess what he could claim to be? African-American. How stupid is that?
Race shouldn't matter except in one area, health care. Certain ethnicities are prone to certain diseases or genetic problems.

if you are gonna make that fucking flavor with fortune cookies, it should be understood that youre gonna catch heat for it and you should already agree to not apologize in your little executive meeting.
