They broke out of Daytona 500 coverage to announce this last night. He was one of the constant faces of triad-area news for me...RIP.

(Evidently he was at WRAL in the early-mid 80's too, but that was before I was in Raleigh.)

What a shame, watched him growing up in greensboro, he was a fantastic sports anchor and by all accounts one of the really really good guys.

I wouldn't exactly say they broke out of Daytona coverage, the race was still red flagged at the time. So they broke away from coverage of dudes (and a chick) sitting in their cars watching the track dry.

I must say that the other local stations were classy enough to mention it as well. It was the first story on 12, and 2 mentioned it at the beginning of their sportscast.
