Just curious:

Do you know that the device (almost certainly) records everywhere you drove with it on?

I'm not trying to be "OMG privacy", I just want to find out what random people's knowledge and expectations about this are.

Teh wolfmrash makes a good point.

Your average POS GPS system purchased at Sam's Club or what have you does not have the capability to transmit shit back to Google or the government or whatever it is that you're afraid of. So what are you afraid of?!?

Well, maybe I'm the only one who thinks like this...

But say you were accused of a crime. Maybe you committed it, or maybe you didn't. Use game theory.

A) Prosecution has the knowledge that the GPS history is often there
B) Defense has the knowledge that it's there

It's not scandalous unless you presume that one party knows and chooses to withhold the information, or something like that. Either way, not knowing can screw you. Or you could disable it. Or you could not disable it and set it up so you could make it look like you disabled it...

swear to god, I'm not planning on killing someone. It's just so much fun to think about.

if you didn't do anything wrong, i don't really see the problem with it. because justice is fair, and all that.

Discounting professional data recovery services, it probably won't keep it for that long. Depending on how frequently you drive, it will delete history beyond so much size, or at least mine will. So if it recorded it in the first place the majority of yours is probably gone.

Yeah, you're dense.

At least for the type of device I'm talking about, you can turn it off. Furthermore, any "power" in this information in the current world comes only from other people not knowing/understanding technology. It would be perfect if you suspected your spouse of cheating and your spouse was tech-dumb. Aside from that, it's obviously of limited usefulness.

I'm kind of amazed by the difference in cost/effort compared to the traditional image of professionally done investigations. The FBI will occasionally put trackers on vehicles, but they'll often have large battery packs and transmitters, making it a really serious system. On the other hand, if you have access to the car 12 volt cigarette lighter plug, you can just plug the damned $100 device in. You can probably turn off the startup sound too.

I'm not saying that either someone is currently tracking you, or that the data is infallible. The amazing thing is that we automatically record our daily lives to this detail. Combined with human creativity, it opens the door for shenanigans. That's still true.

uhhh, you're gonna have to have the device out in the open if you want to actually get any signal of any sort. I know it's using radio signals, but most units I've seen won't get a signal under the seat or anything like that. i could be wrong, though

Mine seems to still work closed in the center console and glovebox. Granted, that's just some cheap plastic over it.

But you are correct that some elaborate plan to hide one of these totally underneath the driver's seat would likely not work.

I knew my GPS recorded its track and I use that feature to find my way back to the road if I get turned around offroad and use it to help me figure out how close I might be to my previous track (like when trying to get all the way around a fire)

No, I didn't know that.

But I'll make sure to destroy it in case I murder someone.

If I ever commit a felony, I'm going to let someone borrow my GPS and have them drive somewhere while I'm doing it.

Y'all are talking all about the BC trial, but they had a car navigation system, and it was never checked. So, it can't get you out of a conviction if you're innocent if the cops never check the damn thing. But you better damn well be sure they'll check it if you're guilty.

I paid $80 for my cell phone last year and it does not have this.

The best way to create a fake a alibi always was, and still remains, a trusted and corrupt friend.

I know this shouldn't piss me off. This is that guy's life. Doesn't have anything to do with me. I also kind of think it's a cool idea to record everything possible.

http://blog.stephenwolfram.com/2012/03/the-personal-analytics-of-my-life/

But still... still... this graph just pisses me off, for no other reason than it shows that he is the exact type of person I hate.

It's one thing to neglect your family by spending 70% of your life on the phone (wtf, who the hell are you talking to and they they also spend that much time on the phone?), but the fact that he posts these graphs on the internet shows that he's kind of showing off with it. It doesn't matter that you spend time on that phone, it matters that you fucking get something accomplished with the conversation.

It's kind of sad. Like a self-made prison. This is office life for many people today.

well he's apparently constantly occupied with other stuff, so he forces himself to:
- wake up at noon and walk on the treadmill... while talking on the phone and writing/coding
- take an hour or two for dinner with his family

I have no problem admitting that career is not as high of a priority in my life as it was in his

i like how Infiniti wants me to pay $150 to download and burn a CD of their newest map shit for my navigation system so they can install it at their dealership when Google Maps has all the newest stuff anyway, for "free"

someone planted this bit of conspiracy in my head the other day. Do you think the free GPS solutions out there actually choose the best/quickest route or just the one with the most revenue generating spots? C-Stores, McDs, Hotels, etc...
