If you've ever been in the military you'd know that most soldiers are very open-minded and tolerant to various religious choices. They do what they're told because it's their job and that's how it works. Name another job on earth where not doing what you're told can send you to prison.

Unfortunately, just like everywhere else, there are a few extremists/crazy people and they get all the press. No one I ever knew in the military would condone this type of behavior. This guy deserves whatever he has coming to him.

That said, it would be nice "if america's defense was actually used to defend america"

The thing that made WWII different wasn't that our soldiers fought bravely for something they believed in. Check your history book. That happened quite a lot even before WWII.

However much the world hasn't lived up to what you would consider "good", there do exist some objective accomplishments that can't be denied. Semiconductor technology enabling a computer revolution isn't exactly something you can fake. Maybe most people were oppressed in one way or the other while pursuing their happiness, but either way there were at least some people who chased their passion and were able to make a space-age kind of advancement compared to the pre-WWII boom.

I generally consider our wounds to be self-inflicted, and a result of human nature itself. People who go to college typically have wacky idea of what a "good" job is, and this image dooms them to dissatisfaction with whatever they get. That's a problem, in addition to the fact that consumption goes up with every additional dollar of income. That's a treadmill you created for yourself. If you go by what people say, $150k per year is just barely making it. Your home is fancier than what they live in Afghanistan, and until such consumption items hit a wall (which they rarely do), your happiness will never improve.

Right now I'm more worried about that oil crash.

I hate our government. What matters to me is that there are people out there who would die to see my country, my home, my family and my friends completely obliterated. I will not let that happen.

Did my government start the war in Iraq? yep. Has my government fucked shit up in Afghanistan? yep. Has the white western world pretty much shitted on the middle east and asia for the last few centuries? yep. I completely understand why the world hates us.

But sitting around, and bitching and moaning on the internet, or picketing with signs, or "occupying" a fucking park won't stop shit....so I joined the military. The wars, and the killing, and the hatred, and all the fucked up political bullshit would continue going on with or without me. So I figured I might as well try to make a difference.

I would say the majority of all my friends, in all different branches of the military joined for similar reason. All of them are good people. None of them wish for wars. I have friends in Civil Affairs and Psyops who do nothing, but try to restore and repair damaged communities, organize toy drops and food drives for children. I have another friend who does nothing, but teach Afghans how to raise crops other than poppies and make money doing so. I have a cousin who is a Ranger in the Afghan mountains right now doing nothing, but protecting a civilian village from Taliban fighters. I could tell you countless stories of all the incredibly heartfelt things I have seen and heard of american forces doing in hostile countries.

Yes killing is bad. War makes people do terrible things. Some soldiers have done terrible things and murdered innocent civilians, but I guarantee you that more american civilians murdered each other this year than service members murdered afghani locals. Does this provide me enough evidence to label all american civilians as weak minded, hypocritical murderers? No

So, before you go on labeling an entire group of people you know absolutely jack shit about, I recommend you use that oh so wonderful "open mind" of yours to learn something about us.
