This takes no talent.

a)

1) Rubik's cube algorithm has been solved.
2) Digital pictures can be color filtered into the 6 colors of the rubik's cube.
3) Divide the pixels of the picture into 3x3 squares.
4) Solve Rubik's cube into the desired 3x3 solution, place cubes in order starting from top left and end at bottom right.
5) Profit.

or

b) Remove the stickers and place them in desired position to save time.

First,

You do know what the difference between talent is, right?
You know, the actual definition of talent?

Secondly,

You used the word "probably" because the probability of someone that's never done shit in their life is the majority. However, if you knew me, I am not in that majority. So you lost that gamble.

great art is as much about great patience as it is great talent. even if everyone had the talent to do so, very few would have the patience to work on a piece for days, months, or years on end.

this may not require as much talent as it seems, but damn if he didn't work his ass off to make it. and it looks pretty cool. so no hateration here.

I'm pretty sure he's right guys. When a genius tells you something, it would really benefit you to listen.

There's a little bit more information in what I said that isn't conveyed in "Yes, I HAVE done shit" like the fact that you failed at gambling with the laws of probability and statistics. You should stick to claims of insults you factually know are real instead of just guessing.

On the contrary, you're an idiot if you think this would not save time.

dude, solving a single side of the cube takes like 30 seconds. (plus he wouldn't have to change anything - they come solved) I know it's probably very difficult for an idiot like you, but I think this guy knows what he's doing.

I've learned two things from this thread:

1) Making art out of completed rubik's cubes is fascinating regardless of what GeniusBoy thinks, because
2) Geniusboy can't form an argument other than "Nuh uh."

Are you saying you are incapable of changing one sticker on a heavily blue area in under 30 seconds?

I would like you to make a public apology for being incredibly stupid and unimaginative.

Good luck not tearing any of those, what, thousands of stickers you have to rearrange

Anyway, geniusboy is being stupid again. This is pretty impressive, between coming up with the idea for this art and the completion of it.

This was on reddit a while ago with an article that explained:

1) The rubik's cubes are on loan to him from the distributor.
2) He has to do it by hand, keep them together without damaging them (no glue, just guiders).
3) He had to solve them before he returned them.

^ if skin color is relevant to you in this story, what can i say...

Anyway, for those who liked this:

1) Partial time-lapse video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvWlPl8ltHc

2) The artists' site/blog: http://petefecteau.com

3) The artists' portfolio: http://buttonpresser.com

4) He has created a free guide on how to create cube mosaics and some templates also, for the organization which lent him the cubes: http://www.youcandothecube.com/cube-mosaics ... At the site there is also what they call the best cube solving guide: http://www.youcandothecube.com/secret-unlocked/solution-stage-one.aspx also in pdf: http://www.youcandothecube.com/downloads/Solution_Guide.pdf

5) Specific info and on his site about the project, some of it quoted below: http://petefecteau.com/2011/04/15/dream-big

Quote :
"Technicals:
The mosaic is made of 4,242 officially licensed Rubik’s Cubes. It measures 19' x 8’6? x 2.25? (5.8m x 2.6m x 5.7cm ). It weighs roughly 1000 pounds (454kg). Each cube has been “reversed solved” or twisted so that one of the faces maps it’s nine stickers into the total image, 38,178 stickers total. The construction process took a little over 40 hours and the final installation to about five and a half hours with 6 volunteers helping. The cubes were rented through the You Can Do The Cube organization. The mosaic was on display during the 2010 ArtPrize competition in Grand Rapids, Michigan USA from September 22nd to October 10th. There were roughly 30,000 people who came to view the mosaic during that time. “Dream Big” placed in the top 50 out of 1,700+ entries. The mosaic was left intact for a month after the competition in an attempt to sell it. The pending sale did not materialize and the mosaic was disassembled in late November and the cubes were shipped back to their originating points.

Costs:
The cubes themselves were rented for roughly $8,000 however the total cost of the project was approximately $9,000. A private donation was made for $4,000 and fundraising through special events and Kickstarter.com helped to raise the remainder.

About the Artist:
Pete Fecteau is a designer by day. He attended Kendall College of Art & Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan and attained his BFA in Digital Media Design in 2007. His design portfolio can be seen at http://buttonpresser.com. He mainly works as an interactive designer and helps build online and mobile experiences. Pete also loves illustration, painting, and sculpture and finds time between work to create more traditional art aside for his Rubik’s Cube mosaics. His wife Caitlin and he were married on August 27th, 2011 in Brighton, Michigan they both relocated to San Francisco in January, 2011 were Pete had been awarded a fellowship with Code for America."
