"Glenwood South denizens differ on surveillance camera idea

Bars, restaurants and shops along Glenwood South in Raleigh draw crowds, and police want to place surveillance cameras along the popular drag to keep an eye on everything.

Those who live, work and play in the area have mixed feelings about the idea.

"It would creep me out," said Rashied Sharrief. "It is good for safety, but people may think it is a violation of their privacy."

Raleigh City Council voted to apply for a $100,000 federal grant to pay for the cameras. The city would add in $30,000 for the project.

Joshua Peters thinks that would be a waste of money. "There is no need to invest in surveillance cameras when it is not needed."

Joshua Peters said he feels safe on Glenwood. And he would be uncomfortable feeling watched.

David Mellin, owner of Amra's Lounge and Cigar Bar, agrees the neighborhood is generally safe, and said cameras would keep it that way.

"If people know there are cameras, they are less likely to do something wrong," he said.

He thinks his customers may appreciate the extra set of eyes.

For Bronce and Sarah McClain, who live on Glenwood South, surveillance cameras pointed at their front door would serve as a neighborhood security system.

"It would make people think twice about their actions," Bronce McClain said."

Thoughts? I rarely go to GWS anymore these days, and I see the benefits of surveillance, but it is very 1984.

I like how it pops up a week after someone is stabbed on Glenwood South.

Since I know someone who got misdemeanor charges, for standing outside a bar doorway, smoking a cigarette, holding a beer, on their birthday, I vote no.

It could almost be a meme: Bans indoor smoking, Bans outdoor drinking, and a pic of NC.

Glenwood South is probably one of the safest places in Raleigh. Generally, the more activity at street level the safer a place is.

'public saftey' cameras always make me far more uncomfortable than the thing they're supposed to 'protect' me from...Just another reason to never go there.

thats a whole different discussion I dont want to get into^

I actually think this could be good, with all the fights that go on down that way...it would help for court purposes.

^haha

I feel like it would maybe hurt business. if people feel like they're drinking at a bar and walk back to their cars with the police watching...

The police will watch. The feed will generally be boring.

At some point, daddy's little angel with the DD implants will come walking down the street. The should-be-on-suspension-but-instead-assigned-to-watch-the-creepy-camera cop will zoom in on her tits. He'll PRT SCR several photos and upload them to Facebook. One of daddy's little angel's friends will see them. Daddy's little angel's father, who is the Ivy League-grad lawyer, will file a lawsuit against the police department. The cameras will be removed. The officer who committed this atrocity will be reassigned to doing paperwork in the evidence room for 3 months.

If cameras are such a great idea, why haven't the clubs put up a bunch on their property along the street already? I feel like if crime on the street was really the problem that police will claim it to be that clubs and restaurants would have but in some safeguards such as cameras for insurance/piece of mind.

I'm in favor of this if the cameras have special software that specifically tracks the dragonshirt wearers.

I saw a camera installed at Edwards Mill rd and Glen Eden today.

There was a rash of car break ins, two of mine got hit..luckily one was unlocked so I did not have to buy a window, the other they busted the window and went through it.

I would rather have cameras than armed self appointed community watch captains
