this toilet used to have a balloon float that never worked properly...it would run because the balloon was never lifted high enough to cut off the refill...i replaced it about a month a month ago with a more "modern" float (where the float is like a donut that surrounds the fill valve) and it worked fine...for a month

now it's running AGAIN and it's running a lot...i discovered the toilet shut-off doesn't work (whether open or closed, water is allowed through and it runs constantly), so i'll need to fix that at the very least

we were gone for a couple of days and i so i shut off water to the entire room to keep it from running...i came home and discovered that the tank was completely empty, which leads me to believe that there's a leak in the flapper, but lifting the float itself (trying to make it think that the tank is full, even if it's leaking) doesn't make ANY difference (it still continues to fill)

posting on here is a long shot and likely someone would need to look at it, but as i'm going to go out to get a replacement shut-off in a little bit, i figured i'd post

Needs a new flapper/gasket and probably a shutoff valve. Why the valve went I don't know exactly, but I'm sure it has to do with the fact that they aren't made to run continuously. the initial problem was definitely a leaking flapper though.

given the drained tank, that's what i figured...just seemed strange that the fill valve replacement "worked" at first and now it doesn't...toilets don't SEEM that complicated, but i still wasn't sure if i'd missed something

I went through three different fixes to my flush valve assembly to get it to stop running a few months back. First replaced all of the seals, then bought a new assembly, then replaced the seal on that. Finally bought a different style flush valve and it seemed to fix the problem.


Also had to replace the fill valve because it was sticking and not filling the tank.

just replace the toilet with a low flow toilet. you can get the nice top flush ones from home depot for $98 with the extended bowl. you get a rebate from the State for up to $100 for going low flow. get free toilet, save money on water bill, profit!!

i replaced the shut-off valve and flapper and it's STILL running...i suppose all that's left is the seal under the flapper (the part it sits on top of) and the possibility of the fill valve being defective...at least i can turn off water at the toilet, though

do low flows have the ability to handle manly shits coming from a diet of cheese and peanut butter yet? last time I used one I had to flush with about every wipe.

you can overhaul a toilet for $20 (excepting the shut-off valve which you'd have to buy separately from a new toilet, anyway)...may not be worth the hassle

that said, i much prefer elongated toilets to round ones and i might just return these components and get a brand new toilet...cheapest watersense i can find is about $120, though

get one of those balloon less toilet kits, $10 at lowes. when my balloon float went out, i installed all balloon less toilet kits and never had a problem ever again.

or replace the whole toilet and take your old one out and smash it in a field, Office Space style.
